May I ask you a question Prezleek? I've been watching Steven Universe, following your council (and I rather like it) and I thought this:
In my story, the Hydrix people, one of the Ascended, like the Precursors, which are connected to the power of the "Sixth Elder God", their duty is to assure the continuation of life during the infinity of time against the entropic, decaying power of Xau-Tak (guess this draws some knowledge of the Red Queen Hypothesis; you're a microbiology student, so I assume you know that). The Hydrix created the Gems to aid them in the preservation of life. However, a group of the Gems, the Diamonds, became power hungry and deposed the Hydrix. Knowing that they could not be killed, the Diamonds split the Onyx essence from them and imprisoned them. The question is this: Should the Onyx be a mindless essence core of the Hydrix or Gem individuals, without memories of what they once were part of?

Honestly I'm still quite behind on SU so I probably know significantly less about the show's lore than yourself. I guess in the broadest sense you couldΒ consider both possibilities in thorough detail and with the details and lore specifics fleshed it, it might help to see which possibility is more plausible?
