Totally random but I love your username Your interests lead me to believe it is indeed a reference to S. pyogenes, which made me pretty happy! Are you studying microbio?

Haha Thanks!
Yes it is S. pyogenes. It's my favorite microbe.
LOVE microbiology!

I'm actually doing my master's in microbiology. Focusing on fish pathogens.

I'm gonna guess you like micro as well?

Where do you go to school?? I'm undergrad at UVA so the closest I can get is a BS in Bio, which is where I'm headed (currently a 3rd year). Then onto microbio in grad school! I've only discovered my interest in it within the last 3 years...before that I thought I was going to aim for med school (pathology specifically). Then I realized how competitive it is, and how uncompetitive I am...May I ask what interested you in microbio initially? This is really neat! I don't mean to pry by the way, I apologize if I am too forward ;_;

I am really interested in fish pathogens myself, what brought you to that topic (hobbies, random?) I keep freshwater fish, and over the years F. columnaris has been a persistent problem that I've noticed in the pet industry. I found 2 antibiotics that exhibit synergism, but I want to do more studies to either make something more effective or make a combination of them. I'll more likely end up being a research drone though haha.

Sorry for totally being an obnoxious dork, but I have never met/found someone who is interested in that topic, let alone pathogens that I am too. WOW ! You totally made my day and are really inspirational to me!

No worries! I’m quite the dork myself and I love talking about microbiology!

I’m doing my master’s in the same school I did undergrad in which is at U of Guelph, up here in Canada. From what I can tell many schools don’t offer microbiology as a major (at least up here…it’s one of only a handful of schools). I orginially started out in molecular biology and genetics but we had to take a mandatory intro to microbiology and I realized how much more interesting it was than DNA and genetics (it’s cool but it’s not awesome), so I switched into micro in my 2nd year.
I found it amazing that something we can’t see has such a profound effect on our world, from diseases to the environment.

As for fish pathogens, I’m obsessed with the deep sea and soil microbiology as well as Astrobiology. In our 4th year we can do a research project with a professor at the school. Since I love marine micro I went with the fish pathology lab and am doing my master’s there as well. I’m actually gonna be working a bit with columnaris!

Eventually, I would like to do a PhD in deep sea microbial ecology and see where that takes me!

I’m pretty excited to meet someone else that has a interest in fish pathogens!

Wow! Thank you so much for the reply. You are totally my role model; I can only hope to end up being half as awesome as you some day!
I'm so happy you discovered mircobio, as genetics is quite a different beast! (I am awful at it myself...)

I would really love to hear the type of work you're going to do with columnaris! It's a decently large problem in fisheries (both food grade and in the pet industry) so I think there are a lot of cool things one could do with it.

I haven't thought about PhD work yet myself but I really hope you get to work with those deep sea microbes! I have never learned about them, but I can only imagine how important they are to keeping the entire marine ecosystem (and others by proxy) running. You are one neat woman!

Hello! I'm sorry for the very late reply. I haven't been on for a while and I was signed out. Leave it to me to forget my password as well and my account having old information attached to it...>_<

Hehehe! Thanks!
I'm really glad that I know someone else into fish pathogens.

Mainly, my work is gonna be more on gill disease but I'm gonna be looking at columnaris to see if it has any potential at recruiting brachiophilum to the gills. I'm also gonna be using it as a potential gene comparison.

Not a lot of people know much about the deep sea microbes. There isn't too much on them either as most of them can't be cultured yet. But the ones we do know about are really worth a look! they do some pretty neat stuff, especially at hydrothermal vents (I love extremophiles by the way )! I only learned about them in my microbial ecology class for about a lecture, but that was enough to get my interest. I wish there was a whole class that was dedicated to marine microbiology. I guess everyone just likes to focus on human/animal pathogens.

It's totally fine! I'm so glad to hear back from you

You're really amazing, I haven't heard any academic mention that marine microbio got their attention! It's so cool to see such dedication, I really hope your studies go well with the brachiophilum (that's a new one to me!). I also hope you're able to learn more about the extremofiles in school (and maybe even discover something new yourself for the textbooks of the world!) Archea are definitely very young in terms of our discovery of them...ironic considering that they've been around so long. I believe you'll find some really amazing things about them if you're able to focus on it as a career. It's so neat to study them because it represents an area that we're mostly in the dark information-wise from what I've read. I think I'm a sucker for eubacteria, but who knows, maybe by the time I go to grad school I might get hooked on Archea like you.
