That's awesome cuz, yeah I have been on here for about a year now, good place to put my photos and get good feed back or criticism. I don't have any of my paintings or drawings up here though, try to keep them separate at the moment. Will be moving to Island Bay this week, you should come hang out some time.

I like the vintage look on your photos. I'm still trying to figure out how to get that effect. Any tips?

HollyBroomhall In reply to rayza-nz [2010-01-28 11:34:10 +0000 UTC]

To be honest I never really thought of all my photos being vintage But for retouching I generally use curves, fill layers, and colour balance in different variations

I'm living in Northland at the moment but hoping to move down to Wellington in the near future as there is more going on with the arts down there. I am also really keen to go down the path of photography as a career so trying to gain as much experience wherever I can. Where are you from?

HollyBroomhall In reply to rayza-nz [2010-02-02 00:10:17 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok thats cool, if you want to get into photography then I suggest try the course at Palmerston Ucol. I've heard many great things about it, and a lot of photographers I know have said thats its the best place in NZ to study photography. I'm from Wanganui ha, a bit small and boring but I may be moving somewhere with a bit more potential soon

Yeah Palmerston Ucol sounds cool so I will have a think about that one. Personally I would be keen to get experience by doing an internship or something. I already have a diploma of Art and Design and also recently completed a Bachelor of Arts so my student loan is quite a lot lol. I heard that Wanganui has a really good art course, but probably they don't do photography. I've never been to Wanganui but always pass it on my way to Wellington, might have to check it out sometime Where are you thinking of moving?

Yea thats whats i'm trying to do, work under a fashion photographer and do some assiting work. Its way harder than you think to get that kind of job though, very very competitive and really only quite well established photographers need/have assistants so it makes it even harder. I've had no luck so far. Wanganui is one of the best places in NZ for arts and design, the photography I havent heard much about but i'm sure it would be really good too. I may move to wellington, its closer than auckland and still a nice big city with demand for what I want to do, and my sister lives in upper hut so would be nice to be close

Yeah I can imagine that it must be very tough and competitive to become a fashion photographer or even to make it as a photographer in general. I have a friend who works for Wolf photography in Wellington, I think she mainly photographs functions though. She has told me that sometimes they take on people for internships. I will ask her if she knows any professional fashion photographers in Wellington to help you out a bit if you move there. I really like Wellington compared to Auckland because people are just so much more friendlier down there, and the night life also has a good vibe. Did you have a cool weekend?

Yea it is, but if you have a passion for something strong enough then you'll get there! I think i've heard of Wolf Photography... You should ask her for an internship, it woukd be a great way for you to learn.
aw thank you

Yea and Wellington is easier to find your way around haha. My weekend was very long and tiring ha, lots of going out - friends 18th and also went to palmy for another friend. Good though!

Yeah I will ask my mate if she can get me an internship at Wolf Photography when I do eventually end up in Wellington. Glad you had a good weekend though, its always fun going to birthday parties. I'm actually considering buying a camera lens similar to yours as a good lens makes such a difference to the quality of images

Good for you!
My lens is a really good portrait based lens, thats why I got it. But in general its really good anyway. Just shop around a bit and ask people to make sure you get the best lens you can within your price range
