Hi there. I am sorry, but I'm not taking any commissions for dolls. I am working on several personal projects currently. Thank you for your interest.

Damn! I hate that the pictures can just be taken. Thank you for letting me know. I do see that my name has been mentioned in the comments, so that's something. If my ideas are going to reach a wider audience, it would be nice if it were done with credit. Thanks for telling me.

If it's from Mi G, that's me. I haven't read through all comments, but as far as I could see, there were no other mentions and the poster said "I don't know the artists" when asked for themby someone else.
Yeah, spreading is nice, but it doesn't help when no names are mentioned =/

Thank you very much for mentioning me by name, that's very kind of you! Β It would be nice if people who take the time to assemble artwork to share would also take the time to write down the artists' names for credit!

In my opinion, it's just common sense to do so! I hate it when people don't share the artists, this is just rude.

Hi there! Hope I'm not bothering you but have you ever used Reeves acrylic paints?

I can't say that I have. It's been Daler-Rowney in the UK as my favourite.

And what does you use to seal before putting paint on the doll or pasterl

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

redmermaidwerewolf In reply to KuroBllack [2013-08-19 04:35:09 +0000 UTC]

I tend not to seal first. The acrylic usually goes on pretty smoothly onto the vinyl of the face. I have had trouble with sealers OVER the paint, to be honest, so now I tend not to seal afterwards either. When I have used water based sealers, they still go sticky after a period of time, not idea why, it can't be hot weather, we're in the UK, it's cold most of the year! LOL!

I have found it less problematic to not seal afterwards and the dolls remain matte and fresh. I don't tend to play roughly with the repaints anyway, so it's not a problem for me. SOrry I can't be more help.

I do know you are not supposed to use solvent based sealers, as these will definitely stay sticky on the doll, but like I said, I've had trouble with several water based ones as well, so I can't really recommend.

No worries. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.Β  I don't tend to use expensive materials, just what I can find easily and locally. Any more questions on techniques then don't hesitate.

Well, I am trying to figure out how to make the pastel colors for eyeshadow brighter. Any helpful hints?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

redmermaidwerewolf In reply to KuroBllack [2013-08-25 04:29:42 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the delay in replying. Summer out with the family!
If the colours are pastel, as in chalk powder colours, then it may be possible to mix the pastelΒ  powder with a clear medium. This way it's as though you are mixing with water, (though the medium is thicker and more paint-like) and the colour will appear a little darker.

There are several brands of clear medium on the market, and just looking on Evilbay, one for fabric use, and a couple of white/clear for acrylic. You need to avoid the linseed oil based ones if you are painting on plastic, vinyl.

If the paints themselves are pastel colours, then I'm unsure as to how to make them darker colours, sorry. I hope this may help.

Your work is so creative! Tell me do you make your own wigs for the dolls and if so think you can give some tips to someone who's starting to repaint herself?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

redmermaidwerewolf In reply to KuroBllack [2013-07-19 15:24:56 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much!Β  Some of my dolls' wigs are bought, but I have "trolled" several of them.Β  This is when loose mohair, or yarn, is glued directly onto the doll head, small section at a time, along the rooting lines,Β  It is called trolling because it gives the look of the old Troll dolls when applied.Β  I trolled my zombie Ghoulia and Halloween Toralei.Β  My Neytiri has glued on yarn hair.Β  The Anne of Grim Gables has felting wool glued onto the head as a wig, with a parting line sewn first, This is an effective method of making quick wigs for dolls.

For a small BJD of mine, I made a felt wig cap, then trolled mohair onto the cap, then tacked this onto the doll head.

I'm kind of a newbie myself, as I am constantly trying out new ideas and techniques. I find a sketchbook very handy for jotting down ideas, and am always noting characters ideas and things I want to attempt.

For the repainting, gather as many reference photos as you can, they are very useful for getting the look the want, be it realistic, cartoon or even anime style.Β  Other than the whites of the eyes (I hate painting eyes!) I use thin washes of acrylic colour and build up layers.Β  Chalks (not the kind containing oil) are great for adding shading to a doll. I dampen a cotton bud (Q tip) and rub into the pastel colour, then onto the doll head or body. This doesn't usually need fixative unless you are intending to handle the doll a lot.

Don't use any oil based paints, such as Humbrol, or any enamels, they will not dry at all on the vinyl face and not great on the doll body either. The same goes for nail varnishes, and any fixatives should be water based. I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions I'll try to answer those.

You're Monster High customs are amazing! I've seen them all over the web and had no idea they were all made by the same woman!
And because you are so talented, I was wondering if you had any tips for a newbie modifier about making hands look like tentacles.

Thank you very much! I really enjoy creating! I didn't realise my dolls had spread further Flickr and this site!
Here is a link to my Flickr set. These are the "make it" photos, the before and during pics when I'm creating.
[link]
They show the wire structure under the Medusa snakes and animal ears.
Are you thinking of making the fingers longer? Into tentacles?
Milliput epoxy resin is a two part mixable material that will set rock solid, so is great for strength, but can be heavy used in large quantities. It's great for smaller details but would be usable for longer fingers. I

If you are thinking of really long tentacles, then weight might be an issue with Milliput. The clay I use on my dolls is Staedtler Fimo Air Light. It's an air drying, ultra lightweight clay. It's slightly spongy in texture, but smoothes fantastically and as it's lightweight, there's far less chance of a doll toppling over and losing balance. It's takes paint lovely as well.

If I were making tentacles, I'd add (glue or tape) lengths of plastic coated wire to the hands of the doll, over the fingers, or from the backs of the hands, depending on the look you want. I also tend to add a layer of PVA glue and tissue paper to the wire. It gives the surface some "bite" for the clay to adhere to.

Then apply the clay, smoothing as you go, onto the hands of the doll and around the lengths of wire. I got quite thin snakes like this for the Tonner Medusa doll. It can be fiddly, but take your time, you can always add more clay to previously dried if you take a break.

I pressed wire mesh into the surface of the wet clay as I was sculpting the snakes, for texture, so you could add "suckers" to the tentacles if you wed. Sequin waste would be a good way to do this.

I hope this helps. If I can help with anything else, let me know, and have fun creating!!
