Really interested in your work using reflection, especially "role reversal" would be grateful if you could give me any tips on how you create the photographs...
Keep up the amazing work!!!

Yeah sure, no problem. Basically i set my camera up on a tripod with an external flash pointing into a flash umbrella which was on another tripod. (The flash was a bit of a novelty, i found it downstairs from my dad's old photography days and wanted to mess around, not necessary at all hah.) The Camera was off to the side of the mirror at head height for role reversal. I then put my hand in position, it was vital that i didn't move it between poses. I fiddled around here makign sure the focus and exposure settings were right. I then could reach the camera, push the shutter release, pose in the three seconds that the timer gave me and then repeat for a whole bunch of poses, making sure i never moved my left hand. Once i had all these it was a pretty simple matter of going into photoshop and placing the two photos i was going to use on layers over the top, with the one i wanted in the mirror underneath. Then i erased the mirror part, carefully going around the hand on the top photo, so that the second one showed underneath. I then just did some curves adjustment for the colours

Did that explain it? Let me know if you want something explained in more detail, i'm more than happy to help

I am a complete beginer with regards to photoshop, and am unsure of how a lot of it works...how do you effectively cut out your hand? And also how does the layering work?

I have got Photoshop cs2 is that ok what would you recommend?

Thank you for your help.

remoteman472 In reply to URBANBLUR [2009-04-10 12:25:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah Cs2 is absolutely fine.

So if you open both of the images in photoshop, click in one of them with the pointing tool, (the first one, black arrow) and click and drag the photo into the other one whilst holding the shift key. The layers pallet on the right hand side, by default, allows you to change the order of the layers. The bottom layer might be labelled background, which means it's locked and you can't move it, just double click it and press ok to set it as a normal layer.

Just grab the eraser tool, you might need to adjust the brush size up the top left. Erase parts of the top image, and the bottom will show through. So just erase everything within the mirror to show the reflection that was in the other picture. Going around the hand requires more care, but with the same process, just select a smaller brush size, perhaps one with a fade on the edges so that you don't get hard lines. I use a graphics tablet when i do it, but they're not necessary at all, i just prefer the feel of the pencil in my hand and i think it's more accurate.
