Under the surface of the underground lake the infamous Opera Ghost made his home upon, a young merman lived alongside him. Of course, his land-dwelling housemate had never come close to meeting him; and likewise, the fish-tailed child regarded the other with wonder and fear alike. Sure, he would float up near the surface to listen whenever he heard the beautiful music he would compose and play, but never so much as poked a finger into the open air. After all, he was safe beneath the murky depths.

But he wasn't under the surface at all, at least not now.

Sprawled on the lake shore was a pale-skinned young boy, with large, black fins jutting off of small, pointed ears. Fins of the same shade were on his arms and along his spine, accented with small bands of white. Where his ribcage ended were two sets of gill slits. His tail shone with iridescent gold scales, making the rest of his fins- with the same white-banded black hue- stand out quite well.

The sight would be quite dazzling, if not for how he weakly squirmed in a futile attempt to get to the water. Sure, he had lungs as well as gills- but he dehydrated extremely quickly. And to make matters worse, the left side of his face was quite badly cut up and bruised- and his eye was unable to open. Clutching that side of his face with a cold hand, he shrunk in fear to an unfamiliar sound- footsteps, coming ever closer to his injured, dehydrated form.
