I've actually started doing that 'iterative drawing' thing that Sycra made a video on. 20 heads a day, no reference. While I think it'll absolutely help (at least i hope it will, i imagine it'll take a few months before i see any real improvement), WOW am I really bad at drawing things without reference. Out of the 60 heads I've drawn so far, no two look even close to being the same. And it's annoying because I'm supposed to spot mistakes in one head and correct them in the next, but either I don't know how to spot my mistakes very well, or there are just so many mistakes I don't even know where to start. All I know is I can look at a head, know with 100% certainty that something is wrong, but can't for the life of my pinpoint what it is.

Also I need to try and remember to be analytical and think more, try and actively search for mistakes. When I draw for a long period of time my mind sorta glazes over at a certain point, where I'm not analyzing or learning anything and am just mindlessly doodling. I need to catch myself more often and try to prevent that.

Mindless doodling has its uses too...My best advise is to stay positive and keep punching away at it...You have the core ability, just keep refining, and never give in!

what makes you think that? 

i don't have good lining at all, i can't draw a simple fucking circle, only ovals, and i need to move my pencil around and around like thirty times just to get the vague shape of a circle, by which point i just say 'fuck it' and roll with the egg-shape i made instead.


and if you mean that 'male body study' thing i did when you're talking about a 'good understanding of anatomy', the reason that looks good is because i copied everything sycra did without actually studying or listening to what he said. if you asked me to draw that again i wouldn't be able to.

you DID that. with reference or not, YOU did that, not someone else. (i hope - you better not be a lousy thief. i like thieves. they scream the most delicious screams of agony as i stab them in the eye.)

what i mean by lining, is that your lines are EXPRESSIVE. have MOTION. your Heads study is pretty impressive actually. nobody can draw a pish-posh perfect circle by hand on a first try. not even Michelangelo could. you're doing what 99.9% of competent artists do. don't sound like such a downer, you are actually good.

about time you do an actual piece instead of sketches. i'll be watching.

thanks so much for your kind words, i am extremely insecure so it's always nice to hear someone (other than my mom because she has to be a sycophant for her child) tell me i shouldn't worry so much.

definitely going to draw a full piece soon(ish), using references and shit.

although tbh that anatomy drawing i did over the course of an entire week, adding onto it day by day, so idk if i could replicate it in one session :S
