A very Happy and Creative year to you Tiff! I apologize for my delayed response, was out traveling for a while. I hope you continue to create those wonderful pictures, and write just as beautifully throughout 2017 and beyond.

Hey Roy, a quick question! I'm starting to draw human figures and I remembered you draw a lot of them, where do you normall find your reference images? Do you find them just on dA stock accounts or do you know any good websites?

roy-p In reply to anatiidae [2016-08-08 14:10:11 +0000 UTC]
Hi Tiff, thank you for the question - am glad you asked Yes, you're right I mostly get it from DA stock. But you may also visit onairvideo.com on the web which has a fantastic free artist resource section (Croquis cafe) with lots of posed pics. Besides livemodelbooks.com also has free samples which can be used (apart from their paid stock). I think its okay if images are used to draw from as educational reference, but its also prudent and fair to just email them and ask (besides crediting) if one wishes to post it somewhere. Sometimes I just don't know, or have lost track of my source image, but I thank them anyway.
Sometimes, you'll also find usable refs in DA's artistic nudes section, but I have to warn you about the explicitly graphic nature of most of what's posted there. So you have to do a lot of mental sorting to take only what you can use. I usually go for full body refs in good lighting (e.g. single direct light source with reflected light diffusely illuminating the shadows) which bring out the form better. Selfies taken in the mirror, using flash, are rarely of any use. Also, in order to learn form, shape, structure etc, you may use refs of models of any age, gender, body type. Anybody can be an art model and a valuable source of knowledge for figure artists.
Another valuable source is 'studying' (as against copying) sculptures and figure paintings/drawings by past masters. What you see in their work is the fruit of years of studying, so they have already worked out the problems in advance and include the most representative features in their work. I think the British museum is also a good source, from where you can study Greek era sculptures directly.
Reading up a bit of artistic anatomy will help you know what to look for, what to internalize and incorporate in your work. As the old adage goes - the eyes can't see what the mind doesn't know. I said more than was asked of me, but then I have difficulty reining in my typing fingers on this subject Good luck to you!

Ahh no that's really helpful, thank you so much for all of the resources!
I'll check out the livemodel website, I have Croquis Cafe saved in my bookmarks now, thank you ^u^ And I agree with different models of different heights, shapes etc... that's what I've tried to do at the moment. I find a lot of artists only focus on one type of body shape , when in my opinion you learn more drawing all sorts of body types, not to mention beauty comes in many forms ^^Β

Thank you so much Chloe... your words inspired me enough to take up the brush and add finishing touches to a study I was 'lazing' upon for a while
As regards shading, I feel that since its LIGHT that makes sense of this visible world, illuminating its billions of forms, and I can't possibly 'paint' light on canvas (the brightest light being limited to the whitest white paint/paper)... and the only way I can create its illusion is by varyingΒ the degree of darkness, I better learn to shade as best as I can

Hey, Roy, you use MyPaint right? I just found an amazing collection of different downloadable brush packages if you'd like me to link them to you? There's a lot of traditional- style ones you might like. ^_^

Okay!
wiki.mypaint.info/Brush_Packagβ¦ - All of these are good, but the 'Tone V.2' one, I think, has a great oilpaint brush.Β
www.deviantart.com/art/Brushesβ¦ - Pencil brushes and one ink-style one.Β
www.deviantart.com/art/Mypaintβ¦
www.deviantart.com/art/shameleβ¦ -These are similar to the tools available in SAI.Β
www.deviantart.com/art/Anime-C⦠A few painterly-style brushes and an ink pen.
Each one has download links, and then in MyPaint you go to Brush > Import Brush Package and then select the .zip file. Then if you go to 'Brush Settings Editor', or there's little arrows next to the name of the brush set you're currently on, you can find all the different packages you've downloaded.Β
I hope these come in handy Β

Aww... I'm very much humbled by your kindness, thanks I guess its a case of ;mea culpa' @ views... my preoccupations keep me from engaging the DA community to a greater degree, and ideally its a two way interactive process. So I'm happy and sincerely grateful with what I already have

Vanilla-Flaminga In reply to roy-p [2013-08-04 19:17:10 +0000 UTC]
It's good you're like that then. I feel like that too- I like having not many views since it means you can interact with a more close-knit group of artists if you get what I mean.

roy-p In reply to Vanilla-Flaminga [2013-08-04 19:22:21 +0000 UTC]
Yes of course, insightful viewer comments are a great way to take one's art forward. On the other hand, its not that I wouldn't want more people to view my work, but I'd also have to return the attention in kind - and I'm time-bound to engage more meaningfully in that regard. Still, its great to interact whenever I have that opportunity
