Hi Sebastien,

Thank you for dropping by my page and the watch as well.

Its makes me jealous to see that while i can only draw characters in (inacurrate) historical armors, you on the other hand, were able to wear it and experience it first hand! Keep up the good work buddy

Hope my future works won't disappoint.

Sebastien,

Firstly i would like to thank you for these magnifecent and unique warrior shots.

I'm a curious about historical materials, info, photographs and much more.

So i mostly spend my time with resarching sources whereever i can get. And i can absolutely say, you have quite different pieces.

And if i have my chance, i would like to have your special Ghulam Horseman photos with highest texture. Could you send them tp my mail adress? (klmsilgi@gmail.com).

Shorty I would be honored.

Hi,

Thanks for the very nice comments. Unfortunately, the rights to the high resolution images of the ghulam are not mine, so I cannot send them to you. You can only download from DA if you want.

On the other hand, I can give you the sources for the various parts of equipment shown. The reconstructions are essentially based on works by David Nicolle. Most being in the Arms and Armours of the Crusading era. We also use as sources images from the Warqa wa Gulshah, and also from various Jami al Tawarikh and Shah-Nameh (but these two are essentially informative for Mongol equipment). We also use a few textual sources, like Ascelin, William of Rubrouck, John of Plano Carpini, Marco Polo, and Joinville.

Best regards

I see,

I've a quick research the source that you mention, but i couldn't find anything yet. Thanks for the info again and please if you met some ghulam(Seljuk) warrior in medieval festival photographs please inform me friend. Take care.

I'm already watching you closer.

Hi again, I'll be sure to send you photos if ever I meet some. I know there are groups in Spain, and another in France who do serious reenactment, but I don't have photos (and the Spanish are reenacting Maghrib Moors, not Egyptian or Syrian Mamluks).

I've also seen very recently a group reenacting Turkish "Janissaire" (in French. I think it's ieniceri in Turkish? Not sure how to write it). It's not medieval, but it was impressive and beautiful at the same time!

klmsilgi In reply to sabiss [2012-10-23 01:26:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes friend, it is written as "Yeniçeri" in Turkish.
Janissaires in English.

They're elite soldier class(archer, musketeer, infantry) of Ottoman Dynastsy

I wish we had a group of medieval fan who act in historical festivals in Turkey.

As i said earlier friend, if you share some image about middle east warrior, i would be greatful.

atlantisdesetoiles In reply to sabiss [2012-09-09 09:57:18 +0000 UTC]

sabiss In reply to BurenErdene [2010-04-15 16:27:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! We try to make them as accurate as possible! We base ourselves on the work of archaeologists, historical texts, pictures, statues and a few historical finds... That part is actually longer than making the armour itself! ^^

Hi, I recommend reading the following:
[link]
It is not the most fabric-saving pattern, but by modifying it a bit, it does just fine.

Tunic finds apparently have a much more complicated pattern, but it is maybe because de fabric was damask.
Otherwise, you should take a look on the miniatures here:
[link]

Good luck with your costume.
(What was your French persona, by the way?)

Good day and a happy new year!
I'd first like to say, that was amazed and awfully jealous looking at all the photos from the re-enactment events! In short: Me want too!
Second I have a little question to ask: By approximately, how much practicing re-enactment like you yourself do costs?

Thank you in advance and servus!

sabiss In reply to Re-Animatorian [2010-01-02 07:29:12 +0000 UTC]

Hi! And thanks for the watch!

I'm glad you appreciate the costume and equipment I have up here on Deviantart!
To answer your question, money is not the primary problem, as long as you know what you're going for. Most of the things that I have (at least for the Mongol character), I have made myself, or asked other reenactors to do for me (for example the visored helmet and the bronze belt-plates). A few stuff are also from specialized shops all around Europe (Denmark, Poland, Hungary).

If you want to get into reenactment, this is the strategy I suggest:
-first start off with deciding what type of character you want to reenact, the three main aspects of this will be: what time period? What geographical localization? What social status? In the cas of my Mongol character: he is of the late XIIIth, early XIVth century, from Ilkhanid Persia, and he is an officer of a 100 (a "centurion").

-Then, you start looking for historical data, that's the "longest" part, you have to look for depictions of everything you need from underwear to jewelry and equipment that will coincide with your time period and geographical localization. Make sure you know who is who in these depictions, as there might be some traps (example: the Goliath in the XIIth century Maciejowski bible wears greaves, but that doesn't mean that greaves existed in the XIIth century (they actually didn't), only, the scriptures mention greaves, so the artist tried to depict something resembling greaves).
Again, in the case of my Mongol character, my main "sources" for clothing and equipment are the Jami Al-Tawarikh written under Ilkhanid Persia, the XIVth century Shah Nameh and a modern very comprehensive review of arms and armour in the crusading era written by prof. David Nicolle.

-Finally, you can either buy what you need, or make it yourself (it's not that hard, I make my own costumes, leather items and a few bronze or brass items).

It might seem long, and it might seem like you need to know a lot about history or crafts, but you don't, you'll learn all that on the way. It's really a hobby. Anyways, feel free to ask if you have any questions, or even if you already have an idea of what you'd like to reenact!
Also, try and contact reenactment groups around your area... Even if they don't reenact the same period, you'll get a pretty good idea of what reenactment is like.

Good luck with reenactment! And happy new year!

Re-Animatorian In reply to sabiss [2010-01-03 21:33:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! There's no real reenactment possibilities for me yet, but when comes a time, when I'll start to reenact, I'll be sure to send you a postcard with a nice bottle of wine attached to it.
Thanks again, and a happy new year!

True, I don't get time to go on DA much, just enough to look at my deviantwatch list... But hopefully, with the medieval faire season coming up, I hope to take photos and post... I'm also working on some leather and steel... Might put those in the artifacts section.
By what I've seen on your photos, you're very pretty indeed... Heh ^^

I know what you mean. Haven't been able to go to anything out of town, but I've been getting ready for the spring faire that takes place near me. Discovered how acquired an obi is even! (faire might kill me, haven't worn it more then a couple minutes.)

Post pics, and I'll even try and remember to take pictures this weekend.

Take your time, choose wisely! I knew I wanted to be a scientist since I was in high school, but I think I'm a bit special... The nerd type, lol.
I always was interested in too many things: science just being one... I also like making stuff, artistically speaking, I like historical stuff as well...

I saw on your page you liked a lot of classical authors... That's a good thing!

Hahaa thanks Well, seeing as I'm not exactly all that sure what I want to do as a job and all my real interests are sort of artsy/literary/philosophy orientated and therefore not the kind of thing that will bring in money (a big concern for my Mum lol) I think business is what I might end up studying anyway but we'll see how things go...

And yep, I read a lot

sabiss In reply to azrael1984 [2007-02-10 17:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, litterature and arts are great as a pass time, just like my interest in historical stuff... So you might do business studies, and put litterature and arts in the hobby area... Just as I did with science and my hobbies (then again, I like science... I hope you like business... ^^)
