If you're still looking to do Lolita art commissions you should go post on egl comm sales on Livejournal. :3 I'm sure you could get someone to commission you there.

sadboyinsnow In reply to Miss-JessieKate [2011-06-05 05:20:21 +0000 UTC]

I've thought about taking commissions. Maybe after I finish my summer classes. Although I don't really have a way of taking payments and I'm not sure mailing cash or checks is the best idea. I'll think about it.

which livejournal egl group? there are multiple yes?

unrelated note, are you going to be at AMA in 2 weeks?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Miss-JessieKate In reply to sadboyinsnow [2011-06-06 02:50:25 +0000 UTC]

There are multiple, but the one called egl_comm_sales. That's where everybody goes to buy and sell Lolita clothes and you can also do art commissions there.

No, I don't think I'm going.

ill have to check it out if i decide to offer non at-con commissions, although dealing with the shipping, etc would be kinda tricky, though its doable. honestly though, and this is just going off of my experiences at cons, the target demographic who is into lolita fashion doesn't seem to be all that interested in commissions or buying much artwork, or at the very least my particular artwork. They usually skip our table and go right for the people who make the lolita accessories, or buy fanart haha. Lately I shifted focus for a while from drawing straight up lolita to trying to start a comic, and focus on the ratings parodies, etc. although I do start a random lolita picture now and then. Oh there was that large maid project for charity we did too.

that sucks you wont be there

You could offer to just send them the file because a lot of artists on there do that I think.. But if they were looking for any kind of traditional piece they might just want the original, yeah.. I'm sure if you shipped the drawings between two pieces of cardboard in a padded envelope that would do fine, though.

sadboyinsnow In reply to Miss-JessieKate [2011-06-07 18:16:05 +0000 UTC]

I figured I would do traditional if anything, I know that I could just as easily make a digital file but I've never really done digital commissions before and I'm more comfy coloring with markers. Cardboard is easy enough to get a hold of. I'll have to see what my schedule permits and any other arrangements.

Miss-JessieKate In reply to sadboyinsnow [2011-06-09 16:16:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I meant you could draw it, scan it in, and send them the file of it scanned, but yeah, cardboard is easy to find.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sadboyinsnow In reply to Miss-JessieKate [2011-06-09 18:02:09 +0000 UTC]

Ah. no, if I sent a file it would be because it was a completely digital piece. I'm of the mind that, if you pay for something you get something tangible in return. but then again I prefer physical media rather than completely digital content (even though society has shifted to phase in digital and phase out the physical). Plus I prefer to play with markers, I feel that right now I'm a lot better with them.

Yeah, I'm not about to try switching to a digital media either. xD

sadboyinsnow In reply to Miss-JessieKate [2011-06-11 02:27:48 +0000 UTC]

Digital can be pretty fun its just ive been having some difficulty with the whole...digital painting (which is why i haven't really posted any finished digital color stuff, cause well...i haven't been able to really get comfy with it yet.

Sketching digitally has been fun though cause i dont have to go through stacks of scrap paper and if i want to fix something i can physically cut a section and move it around. Inking is still a lil tricky for me at times though.

(shameless self promo: which all of you can watch me do on livestream...check here or my twitter feed for announcements on when im livestreaming)

I tried digital art when I was younger but I'm not about to buy anything to start trying it again when I like color pencils so much anyways.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sadboyinsnow In reply to Miss-JessieKate [2011-06-12 21:47:42 +0000 UTC]

buying the necessary tools to do digital art can get expensive. Although some stuff you can find used and save some money especially if you're just starting out. But if you enjoy color pencil stick with that.

I should try color pencil sometime. hmmm.

I love it, but it takes forever to do the technique right. I'm very happy right now that that's my favorite medium because a stack of drawings I was making for a video for my youtube channel got rained on (I like.. died.) and the damage isn't actually that bad even though they got soaked through. Since Youtube makes the quality on my videos suck I'm still going to use them. (Or at least most of them, I might redo one or two.)

sadboyinsnow In reply to Miss-JessieKate [2011-06-13 13:44:43 +0000 UTC]

is there a particular brand of pencil you recommend?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Miss-JessieKate In reply to sadboyinsnow [2011-06-13 16:20:32 +0000 UTC]

I use Prismacolor (I have the 120 pencil set) and they're great for the most part. The only problem I have with them is that there's always a pencil or two (always blue) that are just crap quality and kind of like drawing with a crayon. When you blend them with the other pencils and stay very patient it turns out okay, but you get a funny textured look if you don't do it perfectly.

Looking at their website, it looks like they've changed the name of the kind I use to "premier soft core." Before, they were just "color pencils," lol.

I started out with a 24 pencil set and then when I had used some of them all up my mom got me the 120 set for a graduation present. I would recommend starting out with a 36 set if you think you'll really like them.

I forgot this earlier but I actually have a set of 12 sitting in a drawer at home I haven't opened yet. partly because its kinda hard to really do anything with only 12 basic colors.

Miss-JessieKate In reply to sadboyinsnow [2011-06-14 18:36:26 +0000 UTC]

It is kind of hard, but the white and black tend to go fast, so it might be nice to have 2 if you get into them.

ive gotten really lucky with my grad program, most classes I haven't had to purchase a book, and even then the books i did have to get weren't that expensive.

This year mine should cost much less than last year, but my money is dwindling down to nothing and no one wants to give me a job. :\ Dairy Queen hired me two and a half months ago but they won't call me in to work and I'm starting to think they never will. :\ I've called them 6 times, too.

Try for an on-campus job through the school? Check the school's library. They often need student help reshelving books, checking Id's or doing book processing. low stress too

Miss-JessieKate In reply to sadboyinsnow [2011-06-19 00:08:35 +0000 UTC]

I would, but I commute an hour to campus and I would have to drive up there just to work 2-3 days a week so that would be 4-6 extra hours driving and lots of gas money. ._.
