# About me

Hi there- I'm Robert, a jack-of-all-trades. I've been making items for about 30 years, from almost everything and anything. At first it was mostly models and cloth items, but eventually I moved into wood and steel.

Now, as my passion(s) include history and in particular- the periods of the late medieval, renaissance, and then the 1900's to about 1945, I've had to learn how to do lots of different things.

Currently, I make items in steel, cloth, wood and leather for reenactors. Mostly it falls into knives and water bottles and pouches, but I'm always doing something new and interesting!

Take a look- and let me know if you want me to make something for you!

Hello question for you... do you take orders and if so, how much for an ithilen ranger quiver and can I request a length for the quiver?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sgainbrachta In reply to GeneralArtistSpeer [2015-04-17 00:49:55 +0000 UTC]

Umm...  Yes...

I'd have to dig out the list of materials and all to give a price, which would be based on the specific materials you wanted, of course.  And sure- if it's a custom order, then a specific size would be fairly easy to make.  The inner bag needs to be sized to fit the arrows, in any case~

Also- the screen-correct ones are somewhat smaller, as each hold only about a dozen arrows, The pictured one holds about 2 dozen, with an overall length of about 30-31" arrows.

GeneralArtistSpeer In reply to sgainbrachta [2015-04-19 01:04:56 +0000 UTC]

The only custom part about it for me would be the size.  Materials wise you can use the ones you used for your quiver.  My arrows are 30" in length so the bag would need to fit that.  Just please let me know if this is possible and when you are able a price.

O.K.- the materials I used are long gone from Tandy, but I'm pretty sure I can find something of a similar nature, I would likely use a "blacksmith" oily side, or a kodiak~  Did you have any preferences for colors?

That's ok.  As far as color goes I was think a dark mahogany.

Hello Robert, first off, love your work, its incredible.  I am very fond of the Ithilien Ranger costume, which is what actually brought me to your page.  I am in the process of making my own Ithilien Ranger costume and was wondering if I could use some of your work as reference points; would this be ok to do?  I am an artist myself and I understand the process of asking the creator before using his or her own work as reference for creative purposes.

Anyways, I love the work and I hope to see more of it.

Thanks!  I'm now working on my own set, and almost finished with all the buckles and such for both sets- I needed to finish for hers and mine at the same time.

Even better than just using those pics- ask if you have any questions- my "normal" email is the same as my name here at yahoo.com.  Do let me know who you are- and I can then give you the things I did right and the things I did wrong, as well as some source material for the proper fabrics, etc~  No need to re-invent the wheel, after all!

Finally- check this site, if you don't know of it already-  ranger.budgetauthenticity.org/…

I go by the same handle there.  Awesome stuff, such cool guys- and rangers from the movies, as well as the books, and everything in-between!

Your work is gorgeous!  Not only that, but one can tell your work is efficient and would likely be effective in combat.  I especially love the halberd and pole hammer.  If you don't mind me asking, how did you start working with steel?  Is this your actual trade, or something you do on the side?  It's always been a dream of mine to do something like this, but it always seemed like an impossibility.

sgainbrachta In reply to AugustusImperator [2014-03-01 19:03:29 +0000 UTC]

First off- Thank you very much!

I try to make things functional first and foremost- which is why the Wasteland=y stuff is so "different" for me- much of it is not very effective, overall...

I started as a young kid in the garage just making sword-shaped stuff, mostly.  After I got involved in Renaissance Faires, I realized that 1) I didn't have enough to afford the good stuff, and 2) Most of the "good stuff" was so non-period correct it hurt...  So I began to read a LOT about metal working, steels and how they behaved.  From there I was lucky to get some time as a sort of apprentice with a modern knife and sword maker.  Mike Lewis of Dragon Steel, who is now in Florida.  AFter that, I started to build my own tools- starting off with a hard wheel grinder and a brake drum forge in which I burned good charcoal.  Then it was practice, practice, practice...

Thing is- it really isn't hard to get started.  Get the book "The $50 Knife Shop" second edition- as it has color photos.  Now, it would be rether hard to build a shop for $50 now, but it can be done easily on the cheap.  From there, you can expand easily.  If you like- drop me a PM and we can chat about it- but first, do get that book.  This way we can start off speaking most of the same language.  It can be had used from Amazon for very little- my last copy was all of $12, shipped...

I look forward to talking steel more!

And again- thank you!

It's my pleasure!  I really love to work steel, and want other people to enjoy it as I do, do really, honestly- it IS my pleasure to be of assistance to you!

Once you get it, you can drop me a note on FB, if you use it- Robert Harbin, here or at my "normal" email, which is sgainbrachta (at) yahoo.com.  I don't check DA as often as I probably should, but it's much more likely that you'll catch me on FB or my main email.  Please do let me know who you are from DA if you do make contact~  at least then I'll know your interest, etc that way!

Wow! GREAT job! I'll be making my own new set, sometime soon-ish~ Gotta get my waist back down a bit, first, though. Got sick and gained back all I had lost before.

The wams have a great look- smooth across the body, no gap at the top, and the sleeves are wonderful!

Ring-A-Ding In reply to sgainbrachta [2013-02-03 19:37:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, man! It really means a lot to me.
Yeah, it fits really well over all. I went for a much tighter fit this time around. Same goes for the Hosen I'm now working on! Though it might not be period, I do think I'll have to run some of my cords from Hosen through the lower corners of the Brustfleck, as it has a habit of popping out around the side if I'm not careful..

It was a hell of a job making those sleeves. I'm glad you like them! I broke a few needles trying to sew all that fabric together around the wrists.

Shame about the weight. Good luck getting back at it! Please know that this project would not have been possible without your helpful advice along the way.

sgainbrachta In reply to Ring-A-Ding [2013-02-05 17:54:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, at least I had fun getting fat!

On parts like the sleeves- you will find that doing the really thick parts by hand works a LOT better. It takes very little time, too. ALso- remember that bias-cut wool, especially felted wool won't fray too much, so you don't have to bind the edges. That saves a ton of time, and also effort!

I hope to get on the new gear in the next few weeks, but the home is a disaster due to building some shelves and a whole sort of "data center" for us. It will help the poor storage problem we have a great deal, though! And then- on to garb!! And a couple of rifles, and a pair of messers. And about 30 knives...

Ring-A-Ding In reply to sgainbrachta [2013-02-06 13:54:49 +0000 UTC]

Heh!
I was considering hearing you out about those Kuhmaul shoes, but it sounds like you've got your work cut out for you already!

I wish I had your skill at iron- and leather working. Knowing how I feel working with good wool, I can imagine the satisfaction of creating something out of such sturdy and rustic materials.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sgainbrachta In reply to Ring-A-Ding [2013-02-20 03:21:42 +0000 UTC]

Skill comes from desire and opportunity coming together- If you want to do steel or leather- make the opportunity, and skill will follow!

As to the shoes, I'll be making a new set for me this season, I think. My pair got torn, so have failed to stay intact. Sad, really, as the soles are perfectly fine... bummer.

If you want a pair, we can work it out- if you want to BUILD a pair, we can also work that out. The leather is going to be the issue, as the tools are pretty easy, really. Even the couple you might want to build are dremel-tool make-able.

Lemme know~

Ring-A-Ding In reply to sgainbrachta [2013-02-20 04:22:58 +0000 UTC]

If you could provide me with some pointers, patterns, or perhaps some useful websites regarding kuhmaulshoes, I would greatly appreciate it! Working on my new costume now, I can just tell I'm going to hate myself for not having proper footwear when everything else is finished.

I actually already have a few tool and a modicum of experience with leather working and tanning(made a kidney belt). Nothing like a pair of fitted shoes though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sgainbrachta In reply to Ring-A-Ding [2013-02-22 15:11:24 +0000 UTC]

Well- the easiest way to make a kuhlmahl is by doing a last- a pattern based on your foot, but NOT a pattern OF a foot. It is a pattern of the inside of a shoe. Hope that makes some kind of sense...

Basically, I draw around my foot, the make some measurements over the top of the foot, so I don't make it too tight, then draw the shape of the sole of the shoe. I use some wood about 2" thick to make the last- usually cheap lumber, what we call a 2x6 or 8 (inches~).then, make the last. I cut a sole to fit the bottom of the last exactly, and use a couple of tacks to hold it in place, than make a pattern from some light fabric. I get the fabric wet, and stretch it onto the last, and use thumbtacks to hold it in pace- then let it dry. This fabric is written all over, for notes- and it becomes my pattern, basically. Then I do the leather...

SO yeah, there's a LOT more than that, but I'm sick so my mind is kinda muddled. There's something else about the last, but I'm not pullin' it up right now...

I'll try to run the process through my head in the next coupleof days...
