First, I am honored by the fact that you have favorited a couple of my pieces. I took a look at your pyrography gallery, and I favorited/commented on several of your pieces. I loved the ladies, the detail was fantastic! Also, I noticed you had a piece that was in color - I was curious what medium you used, and what your thoughts are regarding the combination of color and pyrography. Thanks again for favoriting - OH, and I started a group called "Pyrography Central" if you're interested at all... it's not a big deal kind of group, just a place to share your work and perhaps help others who want to improve. Have a great day!!!

Thank you for putting some of my pieces into your favorites!
The piece that was in color - I used watercolor so that the wood grain would still show through. I haven't seen a lot of pyrography in color. I have mixed feelings about it. Most of the people who see my work prefer the pyrography alone, but one friend really loves the color. It think it depends on the piece and what mood you're trying to convey.
And thanks for the invite for "Pyrography Central"!

Watercolor! That's fantastic! I've been toying with the idea for some time for the exact reason you stated. My first experiment with color/pyrography mix was with oil pencils - HATED IT! I thought the piece looked terrible. My preference is no color, but I have some ideas in my tool box for watercolor accents that I will be trying out when I get to do some work this winter.
And you're welcome for the invite - I know there are lots of pyrography artists out there in DA-land, but the group is new so there's hardly anyone in it! LOL!
Have a terrific day!

You can use watercolor pencils on the wood and then add a little water, or you can just use watercolors straight onto the wood. Either way, don't use a lot of water or color as you can always add to it but you can't subtract from it. Hope that makes sense....

It sure does - never heard of watercolor pencils... I will have to investigate them. Which application do you prefer??? I can't wait to try this

Well, I've only used watercolors on the one pyro. But I was at the 22nd Desert Woodcarving Show in Mesa AZ and there was a pyrographer demonstrating a Colwood Detailer and she used the watercolor pencils. I think it's easier to blend colors if you use the pencils. So I can't say that I prefer one application over another because I haven't used both. However, I do know that the next time I want to use colors, I'll use the pencils.
Right now, I'm using my woodburner on gourds. For color on those, I'm using GourdMaster alcohol inks which are made by Welburn Gourd Farm in California. Goggle "Bonnie Gibson" and see what she does with her gourds. It's freakin' amazing!

Why I am asking because I am currently working on a series of Polar Bear oil painting to raise people attention to global warming.

I've got a really good woodburner. I just enjoy working on stuff that is really elaborate. It takes a long time to do it right.
I LOVE your work!
