# About me
I'm an aspiring comic book illustrator living in the bleak winter of northern Michigan. I love pen and ink work, but occasionally work in oil painting, watercolors, acrylics, whatever works for what I'm doing. Most of all I love to draw, and I'm working hard to make that hobby into a career. I'm very open to any commission works, please contact me if you're interested. Prices vary dependent upon number of figures, sizes, medium etc. Thanks for looking!# Comments

Hey, I just thought I'd let you know that Top Cow is doing a talent hunt.
The details are here: [link]
I'm definitely going to do it. It might be the incentive I need to make the enclosure for my lighbox finally.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up man! There's another one if you're interested being done by a new company called madefire, they have quite a list of big guns on their roster, and they're looking to do new things with the online comics format. I was thinking of giving it a shot. Details are towards the bottom of the blog link:

Thanks for that. I'm a little unsure if they want to see sequential horror illustrations or what since they say they are not looking for a comic book style. I asked and when I find out I can let you know if you want.

Yeah, it wasn't really explained very well, I agree. I just took it as they were looking for more experimental techniques in pen and ink, more outlandish style rather than sharp Jim Lee or Micheal Turner stuff. But yeah, let me know what you find out.

Where in MI are you from? You should head on down to Grand Rapids and go to Kendall College of Art & Design.

I live in Petoskey, about three hours north of Kendall. I thought about heading to Kendall when I graduated high school, but i decided I wanted to play football and take other subjects than art, so I headed to CMU instead. Sometimes I think art school would have been more beneficial, but I think I would have gotten burned out at that point in my life. No regrets. Are you a Kendall student/grad?

I currently a student there. What do you want to do for a living?
While art school is not necessary it can be beneficial like being surrounded by like minded people pushing you to take your art to levels you might not have taken it had you not been under pressure and competing.
I read the first issue of your Detroit Memoirs comic and I was impressed. Have you read any books about sequential art by Will Eisner?

skeel76 In reply to jbyrd117 [2012-08-18 17:07:36 +0000 UTC]
yeah, looking back on it the competition would have been a big plus, as I got really lazy at CMU without really high level artists around to make me realize I wasn't that fucking good. I found out later, haha.
I have read both of Will Eisners books, as well as "A contract with God", they're all great stuff, and I took a lot from the instructional books. I am definitely looking to make comic book illustration at least a big part of my living, if not all of it at some point. It's been my dream ever since i can remember, but it's REAAAAALLLY hard to break in these days. It's tough to even get an editor to review stuff unless there's something I don't know about (completely possible, and potentially even probable haha). But I don't give up, I'm a stubborn bastard like that. Which is why I did Detroit Memoirs, I had a couple of back end publishing gigs fall through for other people after wasting hundreds of hours of my time illustrating for them. it was good practice at least, but a waste of time in the end. So that's when I decided to do my own shit and out came The Detroit Memoirs. Glad you enjoyed, I know it's faaaar from perfect, there are so many things about it that drive me fucking nuts, but I'm glad I did it and now I just need to learn from my mistakes and keep pushing. you looking to be a comic illustrator I assume?

At this point I'm not entirely sure what exactly I want to do but I know I want to illustrate. Either a freelance illustrator, comic penciller, storyboard artist, concept artist etc. I plan on putting together multiple different portfolios just so I can have specific portfolios for each occupation.
You should try submitting some pages to the portfolio review here: [link]
Reading the portfolio reviews he does are really helpful.
A book I read recently that has some info about breaking into comics is Creating Comics from Start to Finish. I recommend checking it out from the library or something. Also the Modern Masters books are helpful in that they interview the artists and learn how they broke into comics etc.

Hey, thanks for the links, the portfolio review looks like it could be interesting. I'll be sure to send that out when I get a new story going this winter/late fall.
I admire your occupational choices, all things that I myself enjoy greatly, I hope you have more success with it then I have the last ten years hahaha. It's a biiiiiiiiitchhhhh.
