Well, well, well. I've just gotten around to checking out this site again. I tried my hardest to steer clear of skyking and his deviations. I seem to remember a note he sent me telling me how immature my art was and how I proved to all of DA that I had the "maturity of an eight-year-old." All I can say is, at least my art, immature as it may be was all MY OWN. I never took any art from anyone. I never used anyone's art to demonstrate photoshop. All of my "photoshopping" was done on my own work. Yes, I may have taken some photos of graffiti and punk kids flipping the bird, but at least I never took any work from anyone else. So, instead of respecting your opinion on my work, I say your opinion doesn't mean jack shit because the work you said was yours may not have been yours at all. No one will ever know, and as much as you would like to prove that all of your other work is yours, it becomes very hard for others to believe you. Ah, the disappointment. So long, skyking. Never will we hear from you again.
...and he's off with a smile and a wave.

Well said. I've seen more than one mean comment from him. Some photography is only special to the photographer because he/she has a sentimental attachment to it. If just ONE person enjoys it, then it has value and beauty. However, if there is someone flipping the bird it should probably have a "mature content" warning... but frankly I could care less.

When I added you to my friends list skyking, I did it because I thought I could learn a lot from your work. Well, I still think I can!

Though he was spotted as a ripper, he took great shots himself, was a great person, and were very helpfull, and, as far as I could understand, he was not banned because he saw himself what he actually had done...

does that when they have the time to check. He deleted before that could have happended, as he says in the journal.
Besides, he wasn't banned (no proof), so he left on his will (at least, some sort of shame for what he did).
It by gone now, anyway....

You know its kinda fucked how so many people can make a big deal about placing an image that wasnt yours on your site, when Im sure you said it was not your work, am I right? Now I know if you had placed something of mine to show how to do something and said it was not yours i wouldn't give a shit. Some people just like to argue and get their way. You shouldn't have erased all your work for the sake of that one person. But I guess by sayin somethin now about it doesnt make any difference. You had good photography.

The thing that doesn't make sense to me is... he's a photographer (was or is) .. and was very respected one at that... and to show an "example" .. why couldn't he use one of HIS own pieces of work? ... that doesn't make sense for him to use someone else's photo... I'm sure if he's the well respected and talented photographer that he claimed to be and had stolen so many hearts here on DA.. that he could at least use his own work to use as an "example" of how photo enhancements can be used.

no you are wrong, he posted up photos that he said was his without mentioning that he took them off other photo websites and manipulated them before posting them on here.
He claimed the photos were his.

We all know that he did wrong, and I'm not trying to protect him, none at all. Just let him deserve the pain without all these words.

Pretty sad state of affairs. He seemed nice enough, it's a shame that he had too little faith in himself and his own talents that he took to claiming credit for the talents of others. Just as much a shame is the fact that there's no real way of knowing which images (if any) he actually made himself. It would have been nice to really see his talents, not the talents he thought everyone else would want to see.
People tend to lose the concept of art, both those who make it and those who view it. Art should not be something you make to impress the world, nor should it be something you scoff at and think 'I've seend better..." Art should be a personal expression or idea brought to life through the artist's own efforts, and as such should be respected not for simply what the end product looks like, but rather the expression and meaning it has for the artist in question. It's pretty easy to see what would drive Lee to claim credit for another's art, I am constantly seeing shitty little comments left all over people's galleries. Comments that go far beyond 'constructive criticism' and delve straight into all out spitefulness. It seems that people spend more time dwelling on whether this line is straight, that color is right, this eye matches the other, etc. than what the artist was trying to convey through their imagery. When expectations become less geared towards 'art' and more towards whether or not every artist is as good as so-and-so, what you have is not a site dedicated to art. What you have is a popularity contest, and with that kind of pressure you can expect incidents of rip-offs to continue.

He dished out his fair share of negative comments himself. Absolutely no excuse for ripping.
Ripping is not a 'mistake'. A mistake is something you might do that turns out to be wrong but you didn't know it at the time. A mistake doesn't contain malice and the knowledge of doing wrong. Ripping is like stealing, and stealing isn't a 'mistake'.

Oh I know he had, in fact when I first had my gallery up he had negative sentiments to say about one of my images (which is how I ended up finding his gallery,) but he also appologized when he realized I no longer wanted to trade blows and partake in the negativity. As for it being no excuse for ripping, you're right, it isn't. Nor did I say it was. What I did say is that with that kind of atmosphere it's easy to see what would drive a person to that level.

Let's study the meaning of 'mistake' shall we:
Mistake: A wrong action attributable to bad judgment or ignorance or inattention.
Try and tell me you've never said something out of anger and regreted it, or that you've never acted in a way you wish you hadn't. We've all done stupid shit, we've all done it for all the wrong reasons. It doesn't matter if it's guided anger, greed, lust, etc. or in Lee's case, a desire for recognition and attention. The point is, no matter how you look at them, they're all mistakes. A bad course of action made by poor judgement. Once they've happened you can't take them back, you've just got to strive to do better in the future. Obviously, his actions met consequence, more than enough people (probably more than necissary) called him on it and his 'art' has been removed. So, the only reason anyone could have to continue to parade his faults is simply to promote negativity.

Posting stolen artwork and lying about it as being your own has nothing whatsoever to do with ignorance or inattention. Bad judgment? Perhaps, but I disagree as that still removes the element of guilt. Having bad judgment to me implies that you meant no harm or were unaware of the ramifications of your actions.
In this case, Lee took another photographer's work and lied knowingly to the people here at dA. This is not a judgment call in my mind. He knew full well that what he was doing was against the rules of the community. It was a blatant, pre-meditated deception that he would have continued with indefinitely had he not been caught. It wasn't a split-second word said in anger and later regretted. You're more understanding than I am if you feel that's merely a 'mistake'... Sure, we all have those quick lapses in judgment when we're in an argument for example. We don't all steal and lie about it, however.
The faults continue to be paraded because of how important an issue this is to the artists of the community who don't want this sort of thing happening again. When an artist has his or her work stolen, that strikes pretty close to the heart. (Some of us are even willing to pursue legal action.) It's not about promoting negativity, it's about displaying to anyone who would do as Lee did that it's not acceptable here at dA.

There's also a difference between bring awareness and simply beating a dead horse. Realisticly what he did was between him, the artists he stole from, and the administrators of this site. The consequences for what he did only need be decided by those two parties (the artist may file lawsuits, they admins may ban, etc.) and as far as I know that situation is resolved and dealt with. So there is no justice in continuing to drag his name through the mud, his punnishments were decided (whether any lawsuits or banning were to happen is strictly between the involved parties), he withdrawled from the community, it's done and it's over with. No lynch-mob mentality is needed, no reason to sit and hang his corpse out in the lawn to scare off would-be rippers.

I would also like to say that I, in no way, shape, or form, condone what Lee did. Nor do I hold a grudge or am apart of the angry mob. He made a mistake (we all do,) he got called on it, it's done and over with. I feel bad for the artist(s) who got ripped off (nothing worse than working hard to create someone only to find someone is claiming credit for it) but there's no sense in holding a grudge, it won't change anything and it won't get you anywhere in life. In closing, I'd just like to say good luck with your art Lee, hopefully you won't let one slip-up set you back, and you'll let us all get a glimpse at what *your* talents are truly capable of. Have faith in yourself, and in your art, and you'll be just as good as the artist(s) you envied. Ciao, Lee.
