Hi Larry,

I was wondering how the commissions are coming.  I have the original emails if you need them.  Let me know.  Thanks.

Odd that you would ask...

I'm actually trying to get addresses for those commissioners whose pieces are currently completed (I'm only about halfway through the list of commissions, sadly - BUT my reason for being so far behind is pretty friggin' incredible...one of my comic projects, 'Wormwood Rising', was optioned for a big-budget, summer-release (not this summer, though - lol), full-length motion picture and I've been slammed with all the work I've had to do for both it and the one currently being filmed called 'Declassified' (which is not one of my projects but has to be finished before the director can move on to my project).

Anyway, I've taken a block of leave from the film work to try and finish up these dreadfully late sketch card commissions, blank cover commissions, and even another 11"x17" commission piece as well before I have to get crackin' again on the film work.

If you've got old emails, that'd be a HUGE help!

Many thanks - and all the best.

I hope so, some of the books look awesome.

Again, thank you.

Actually, we have 12 comic titles debuting at the Baltimore Comic Con, Sept 8-9. As soon as we return, all commissions will be finished. I will also be including copies of the aforementioned books when sending out the commissions. These books are signed/numbered and limited to 250 convention-exclusive editions. Hope all is well.

I really loved the X-51 series and your "embellishment" was great. Do you have any of those pages for sale? Please send a reply to my email. Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

slickaway In reply to Spaceknight711 [2012-01-08 15:04:09 +0000 UTC]

I have one single page left from that series and, sorry, but that one's strictly for my personal display. Nostalgia, if you get me.

Thank you for the kind words on the book. Joe Bennett is an amazing artist but Hell to ink when you have editorial direction that leads you to change overall stylistic portrayal, add characters, and change the main character's costume in a truncated time period due to early production delays (two pencills dropped the ball on the series prior to Joe Bennett tackling the pencilling chores which put it behind the eight ball early on). It also doesn't help that the man puts so much into every panel that inking each one becomes like inking a page's worth of work.

You may also want to think about commissioning a piece (X-51, if you so desire). If you are interested, please get on the waiting list as soon as possible as I'm currently booked through February.

I am very interested. Your work is exceptional, and attention to detail is stunning. Reading your criteria for commissions, I'd like to get on your commission list. As I know you can do an awesome X-51 and sentinels, that's what I'd request. Four primary figures: X-51 (Sentinel version) , Nimrod Sentinel, Jocasta (X-51 love interest), and Ultron (Jocasta's Husband). Action: Your choice. Background: Let your imagination run wild, the more tech, the better. The piece would be fully inked and colored. If this seems reasonable, let me know how to get the ball rolling!

That sounds great! I am definitely thinking about a full-sized comic piece. Probably with Razor and friends. Just let me know where to send the money and my idea, and I will have something finalized in a couple days.

I really like your gallery. I have been a fan since London Night Studios. Do you do any commissions?

slickaway In reply to Wargroch [2012-01-03 03:29:11 +0000 UTC]

Great to hear from you!

It's very rare nowadays that anyone even remembers LNS, much less someone who worked there - what a nice surprise.

I have to thank you for 'keeping the torch burning', so to speak, and thinking enough of my art to inquire as to a commissioned work. I'd love to do something for you.

That having been said, there's a backlog of commission work that has me booked-up until the beginning of February. Since the second Marvel card set that I provided cards for was released, I've been innundated with similar requests (for APs, blank comic cover commissions, full- and half-sized page work, and the like).

On top of those pieces, I'm also still doing card sets (I'm working on the Avengers set through Rittenhouse and the Red Sonja set through Breygent at this time).

Also, I've been doing movie poster, DVD packaging, and costume & prop design for a director in LA LA Land. The last has been a fantastic break for me as the director has recently optioned one of my comic titles for his third film through Universal Pictures (not a done deal yet, but my fingers are crossed and my hopes are high after reading the first installment of his screenplay for the project).

As far as commission prices go, nothing is solidly set in granite. Artist Proofs (APs) for different sets rate differently due to demand and set popularity. Same goes for the blank cover commissions. I'll try to give some indication below:

I still have Vampirella sketch card APs available at $50.00/pencils, $70.00/inks - the color 'red' is added as a graphic element at no additional charge but is only added to inked pieces.

I also have CBLDF sketch card APs remaining at $75.00/pencils, $100.00/inks, $120.00/colors.

I have quite a few different blank Marvel (variant) sketch covers for various comic properties such as Ghost Rider 1, Punisher 1, Avengers X-Sanction 1, et alia - they run $100.00/pencils, $150.00/inks, $200.00/colors.

I also have three (3) blank covers still remaining for 'The Infinite #1' through Image (Robert 'Walking Dead', 'Invincible' Kirkman) - same price point as the Marvel covers.

The 8.5" x 11" commission work (on Bristol board - a half-sized comic template) runs $60.00/pencils, $80.00/inks, $100.00/colors.

Full-size comic work (on Bristol board - 11" x 17") runs $125.00/pencils, $175.00/inks, $225.00/colors.

The half- and full-sized comic work is inked with crowquill, the rest with Micron Pigma artist's pens.

All color is (mainly) Berol Prismacolor-marker applied, with some gouache and/or colored pencil for texturization/highlighting.

There are no character limits (other than a maximum of four main characters) or background limitations imposed on the pieces - if you so request something be included and I can reasonably make it fit into the image area, rest assured you will have your wish granted.

If you wish to be added to the commission list, I take a 50% deposit on the work up front. Once the image is finished and ready to be mailed out, I email out a low-rez jpeg as a sort of 'proof of life' for the commissioner. Then, the last half of the payment is made, the piece gets shipped, and I get to anxiously await your receipt of the final piece ('anxious' as I love hearing the responses I get when the original arrives and the detail can be examined in full and glorious review.

I hope we get to work together on this piece, and soon.

The following links provide examples of commission work (these are of Marvel Aps only). I use these as examples because it's hard for people to accept that all that detail is present on a piece of paper that measures only 4" x 5". It also is a good way for them to judge the level of detail that would be made possible by commissioning a larger piece of work.

I actually inked professionally for about 10 years (including work for Marvel, Image, Chaos, London Night Studios, and more).

So..the answer would be yes, lol.
