Hey mucho gracias for the +fav! I am really glad you liked it!
As for how I achieved the high contrast, it was really quite simple. I took the shot at night looking out to the yard from the house where the icicles were--thus, there was nothing close behind them, only a tree a bit further off (you can vaguely see it in the pic)... I used a flash, and as it had nothing immediate to reflect off other than the icicles, they were the only things that it illuminated--the background remained dark. Simple huh?
And btw, I love "obsolete"... Very cool. Are you gonna take any more shots of that spot?
