Everything in Flash is object based. If you want to edit the actual pixels in the object picture, right-click it and click Break Apart. Then select what you don't want in the pixels and delete them (it selects pixels based off colors.)

Ok. When you rip the sprites off the sheet, just import them into Flash.

Click picture when you import, Modify > Trace Bitmap... Set everything to 1 and set the drop box to Pixels. Select picture background and delete.
