apparently it's a sewage drain. i'd never seen it before though, and i've been to this beach throughout my entire life. i heard it's underwater most of the time, so i guess the tide was pretty low that day. it was awful to see that thing pointed out to sea, but it was somewhat ironic and amusing that all those barnacles and algae had made it their home.

A lot of these are old and were put there in a time where it was legal. These days they are generally not used.

i was taking photographs for a benefit for mentally handicapped children at a giant historical mansion in portland, and i found a pile of mangled, displaced mannequins in a storage room. half were covered with sheets, and the room was all in stone and pipes, very eerie indeed. and thank you, i'm glad i scare you.
