You seem kinda lost, so I'm gonna jump in and offer some words, not necessarily wise ones.
Okay - to maketh the smileys: There is a link called 'emoticons' when you post a message anywhere. Click it, and you will see various ones you can use, and the code to put in for them. for example, : nod : without the spaces gives you 
Same for : aww : and : giggle :

And, to put up an avatar, you need a 50 pixel by 50 pixel sized image.
Then go 'Edit Profile' on the right of your page, and there is a browse box for avatars. Click browse, choose the file of your chosen avatar, and go okay. Then it will upload it and put the image as your avatar!
You can shrink images in a program like Microsoft Picture Editor by using the 'crop' and 'resize' commands.
