I don't know what platform you use for your art, but I thought that this site: www.photoshoptutorials.ws/ might be of some use if you use photoshop. Often times, in class, we were left to fend for ourselves, so I would go online and look for tutorials that peaked my interest. If you do do a tutorial, you could learn alot. I really hope this helps,  if not...sorry, I couldn't be of much use

I once again wish you luck on finding a mentor. I feel bad that i'm not any help, but I know next to nothing about photoshop so I obviously don't have any tips or advice to share with you for now.
