Your photos may not be stock but that fact that the photo was changed enough made it the artist's own work and no longer yours. I suggest you start using watermarks if you do not want any such confusion to occur in the future. Another suggestion, next time someone uses a photo of yours and takes the time to thank you about it you might want to take a step down off your high white horse and show some appreciation for someone taking the time to not only enjoy your work but also be inspired by it. Art is to be used for the masses not for selfish praise. Get over yourself and your 'work.' I am disgusted by your utter rudeness and complete lack of understanding. You give photographers a bad name.

what? you really need to look over what you just said. an artist's work is THEIR OWN. the fact that it is on the internet does not give anyone with internet access free reign to use whatever they find, however they wish. art is to be ENJOYED by the masses. not USED IN ANY WAY ONE PLEASES. what kind of an education are you getting?
being inspired and basing your work around ideas you got from looking at someone's art is one thing, but taking someone's actual work of art and drawing over it is not only pathetic, but it shows disrepect to the artist.
i have no idea in hell how you think someone should "show some appreciation" for having some jerk take their photo and run it through a filter in photoshop and call it their own work of art. you have a lot to learn about the world of art and the world in general.

I suggest instead of insulting my education you take a look at your own. She did not take the photo and just place in on her page without changing it sufficently to make her own piece of work rahter than your friend's. It is true that you cannot take any photo off the web and claim it as your own but for computer graphics, the majority of photos are found in google and used to create a new piece of art. It's not commercial use but personal, meaning this photo is not going to show up on the cover of a book or in a magazine. It's on deviantart. How threatening. In any case, this whole situation would be a big deal if the photo was used for commercial purposes which it was not. What I think is pathetic about the whole situation is the fact that you and your friend can't stop being so snobbish about this whole business. Immerse yourselves in your photographs, capture the world as you see fit and leave the rest of us artists alone. Temper-tantrums are hardly attractive and after seeing these, it is very hard to take you or Laura serious as artists or even hobbyists.
The artwork that your friend threw a hissy fit over was something very personal to my friend. How dare you start throwing names around like that. She is not 'some jerk,' she is someone who put a lot of time and effort into making that picture her own. There was a lot more done than just 'running it through a filter in photoshop.' I'm sorry to inform you of this but taking some pictures is not the only artform out there and nor does it deserve to have that kind of ego-trip attached to it.
Either way, you and your friend got what you wanted. The picture was taken down. So be happy and stop trying to defend a moot point. It gets tedious after a while.

I know this whole thing is probably over, but I really think you are in the wrong here.
If said "artist" does not have permission to use some one else's picture, they may not post it as their own in any way, even if heavily edited.
