Hi there, I'm a contributor for the Watercolor Lovers group and I saw the question you left about asking for tips. I don't think there's a specific spot on the group.

I do have an art blog that I'm trying to get started with art tips/questions.Β

You can check out the blog on tumblr artvibes.tumblr.com the "ask" and "submit" hyperlinks on the top will get you to where you can ask questions.

Sorry if this seems like a self-promo thing, I was just hoping to help you out since I saw your question and I've been trying to get something exactly like that started.Β

Thanks for your time, have a great day! <3

I have seen a few people give you advice, but being as I have had to use poor quality art supplies before, and know what it is like to be poor and make do...i thought i would give my advice.

to get a transparent look, use your lightest color green, and blend it with your light yellow first- i always do blending paint on top of paint, it gives it a really nice look...any way- make sure to dap the color and just out line the plant. Then clean your brush get it wet and use the water on your brush to take the painted out line and blend it into the open space of the object. this will make it a very light color. now here is the fun, once that has dried blend your dark green with a your light orange, just a little bit, you dont' want to over power the green, just give it a hue. now once you have that color test it on a scrap pice of paper to be sure the color is how you like it...then out line the plant again...a darker outline around a light object givesΒ  a nice transparent look to plants and objects.
This is how I would go about painting a succulent...have the object before you, don't be afraid to blend colors that you might not think to use, and also, use a water and make the colors light at first, it is easier to add more color on top a light color...once an object is painted it dark is is hard to lighten it back up...any way..happy painting and have fun i hope this was of some help. ^_^

Welcome! Any professional watercolours will do, though. No need to limit yourself to W&N - Hope you'll have the chance soon.

Hi, I heard you need help with luminosity in your paintings of succulents. I know this is a really basic thing to say, but: Have you checked to see if you are working with translucent watercolor pigments? Different watercolor pigments have different opacity. For the best luminous and transparent effects, you need to use translucent watercolors. Manufacturers have that information on their products somewhere.

I've bee using a pocket set of koi sakura brand watercolors, on the box it says that the colors are mainly transparent, but I'm not sure how accurate that is...

Well, it varies by color. For instance, Chinese White is not transparent at all. It is an opaque color. So is the black the set comes with. Also, people have experienced colorfastness problems with Red Lake. That is, Red Lake fades over time or changes color.

Another factor, though, is the paper you're using. Different papers have different abilities to hold layers of watercolor without becoming muddy or opaque. What kind of paper are you using?
