# About me

I am a 20 something year old who loves creating art, wither it is pencil or digital, I love it! I am self taught and learned how to vexel and draw portraits on my own. I have been creating vexel/pixel artwork for 8+ years and pencil portraits for 5+ years.

2013 - Sadly I no longer create vexel portraits as it hurts my hands now to hold onto the mouse for so long to create them so now I only do pencil portraits and on occasion pixel artwork.

So how was your Birthday--spent with close Friends and Family or all alone?

And I don't know if I asked you this question before, but what type of Colored Pencils do you use? Which are your favorites? How long have you been using Colored Pencils? Have there been any Resources that has helped you along the way--books or tutorials?

It was just a normal every ordinary day for me as always.

I use prismacolor pencils for people portraits. As for the golden retriever, I used fabercastell colored pencils.

Yeesh, sounds like one of my Birthdays. In that case, 'nuff said.

Faber Castell? For the Golden Retriever? That Portrait is one of my favorites! I keep hearing Prismacolor and Faber Castell alot more than anything, Derwent nor Crayolas even make the conversation.

Prismacolor is wax based and easily to blend. Also you can take a lighter color back over a darker color to lighten it or change it a bit where as with Faber Castell, I wasn't able to do except with a white pencil, but it didn't show much of a difference like it does with Prisma. Also Faber Castell is oil based which means they dont develop that wax bloom that Prisma is known to do, but you can take a paper towel and wipe away the wax build up over time (I've had to do this a couple times). Also it is easier to blend the Faber Castell with paint thinner than it is the Prisma due to them being oil based pencils - Prisma requires more layers to use the paint thinner. I like both, but I am more familiar with Prisma an I like how they are a little bit easier to blend and plus you can manipulate the colors easier with them than you can Faber, but that is just my opinion, some might say differently.

Well, you've given me quite alot to consider and think about in regards to technique and results. I do agree that it's all about personal tastes--much like Photographers citing whether Nikon or Canon is better than the other, when in reality they BOTH do the job well, which is why they're both at the top of the pile--but it's also in how comfortable you feel with either brand, not to mention which one fits your style and technique better.

Have you experimented with Watercolor Pencils? Also did you follow any tutorials or have some favorite books or videos or artists you'd like to recommend?

toxicdesire In reply to boot-cheese-3000 [2017-04-01 01:44:43 +0000 UTC]

I did have a set of watercolor pencils years ago, but I tossed them as I didn't have the knowledge then on how to properly use watercolors - ie: I used too much water.Β

I did buy a book about coloring pencils, which I glanced at it many times in the beginning as I was attempting to learn how to use them, but I haven't referenced that book in a long long time as I have found my own way of doing things then vs what the artist did in the book. To me, it was only good for introducing me to the medium. I think its best to just attempt it on your own with lots of practice.Β

That's also another thing I learned, esp after joining dA back in 2008--that all Tutorials aren't the correct way for YOU to do something, it's how the Artist's techniques are displayed and they're sharing it with everyone. Some people might use their techniques, others certain parts, and the rest will disregard it and find something that works better for them.

How much water were you using? I was told that if you dip the tip in a small cap of water that would be enough.

Lets just say at that time, way too much.Β  Now I comprehendΒ watercolors a bit more better. I would like to branch out in them, but have never gotten around to it.Β

Are Watercolor Pencils the same ones people use when they dip their tips in Rubbing Alcohol?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

toxicdesire In reply to boot-cheese-3000 [2017-04-17 13:53:45 +0000 UTC]

No. You draw out whatever you are drawing and then afterwards you wet your brush and take that over what you've drawn with the watercolor pencil and it turns it into a watercolor painting. Β

boot-cheese-3000 In reply to toxicdesire [2017-04-17 20:07:44 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, that sounds like too much work for me, esp since I SUCK when it comes to using Brushes, that's why I exclusively stick to Aerosols--Spraypaint and Airbrush.

It was just a regular day for me, nothing special. Yes I use color pencils (prismacolor brand) and then I use graphite whenever I do black/white drawings.

Prismacolors seem to be the Cheapest ones on the Market from the Research that I've done. Have you tried other Brands and how do you feel about Prismacolor Pencils?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

toxicdesire In reply to boot-cheese-3000 [2016-03-25 01:19:33 +0000 UTC]

I've just stuck with them because I feel like I understand the colors an I can look at a reference picture and instantly know what color I want to choose by its name. Plus I already have my 100+ set of them anyways so I have no need for other brands.

They don't bother me much either but I don't like being Alone on those Special Occasions. Back in the Day it didn't bother me but as I got older I'm beginning to notice that it doesn't hurt having someone around to share moments with, whether it's a Holiday, Birthday, or an Ordinary Day.

boooooooooooo...............

guess I'll have to find the recipe myself then.

I take it you still haven't worked on any Vector/Vexel portraits these days? Your work was so inspirational, it drove me to be just as good as you if not better.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

toxicdesire In reply to boot-cheese-3000 [2015-03-24 17:09:31 +0000 UTC]

No I haven't. The last I did I believe was in 2008. If I create anything today, its either with graphite pencil or color pencils. I tried to attempt to make a vexel a couple years or so ago but it hurts my hand (the palm) to grip the mouse for a long period of time.

Oh and about the cupcakes, they are made by a bakery called 'Kimberley'. You can buy them at local food stores.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

boot-cheese-3000 In reply to toxicdesire [2015-03-26 16:03:55 +0000 UTC]

I'd rather bake my own, no offense.

You can't afford a tablet? That would make it so much easier to make Vector/Vexel portraits what with the digital pen and all. I'm not taking anything away from your traditional work, I'm a traditional artists as well but am trying to learn Ps and Ai so much better these days so I haven't been drawing much but need to and should.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

toxicdesire In reply to boot-cheese-3000 [2015-03-26 21:50:31 +0000 UTC]

I do have a tablet but I prefer the mouse over it when it comes to making vexels as I use the 'pen tool' to create paths for my layers.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

boot-cheese-3000 In reply to toxicdesire [2015-03-27 04:12:34 +0000 UTC]

Well I figure the tablet would make things simpler for you but eh, doowhutchalike.
