Hi! I'm glad you are asking questions and trying to find your way around. Changing backgrounds and stuff is a little advanced. In other words it involves installing code, and also I think you have to be a premium membership--that is, pay for a subscription to the site. Personally I've never wanted to do that, so I couldn't say for sure how to. I don't know if you can change your profile background, but you can change journal skins and gallery backgrounds if you are a member.
I think you can change some of the look of the boxes on your profile by clicking the little pencil in the upper right.
