Wow, thank you! Oh, Your work is always so charming. Your work reminds me of the Henson/Frouds' works, BUT with your own unique style; and its so rare to see. Anyway, again thanks

Boggleboy In reply to ts-larking [2011-02-04 00:45:02 +0000 UTC]

What a delightful thing to say as I love both Henson and the Frouds and they have both been an indelible and undeniable influence on me and my work! It's nice to know though that what I have to offer is still considered unique enough as it would be easy doing what I do to have it slip into the masses of this genre of work and be just another face in the crowd.

And it's my pleasure- I see some influence for the lovely Pui Mun-Law in your won work- yet you are definitely making it your own!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ts-larking In reply to Boggleboy [2011-02-04 02:57:20 +0000 UTC]

Ha! I'm happy to hear that! And Yep I see you're a kindred thinker here. Yes, I do love Law's work, but I'm equally drawn to other works (including yours, and yes Frouds, and oh many artists who are just beyond belief, James Christensen and Daniel Merriam.. and particularly the golden age illustrators)..

The Frouds are pioneers in the methods in which they created, as is Ms. Law a pioneer in the way she chose her own way of using design and watercolour; going against the formally accepted ways. I think this is the real reason I love them all so much; they did it their own way - and showed the world how fantastic something new can really be.
Alas for me its an endless dilemma to be influenced by all this beauty - yet contribute something of my own. I think so many of us struggle with this...it's both a blessing and a curse. But yes, your work is unique - and I look forward to seeing more as well.

Every generation of artists are influenced by their contemporaries as well as their predecessors, it's a simple fact. And every generation has in it some artists who embrace that fact and others whose egos don't allow them to be admit publicly that any one has ever influenced them, regardless of how obvious it may in their work. I believe that Arthur Rackham was one such a person who disliked admitting that anyone had any any influence on his work. The key really is to take those influences in a positive way and combine it all with ones own vision to make it uniquely and unmistakably your own. Sometimes I get a little weary of always being told how much my work reminds people of the Frouds, but at most times, I'm honored by the comparison to them and Henson. I like to think of myself continuing a legacy- after all, I was just as much influenced by the very artists that Brian and Wendy Froud and Jim Henson were influenced by as I have been by the aforementioned. What it comes down to is how confident one is with ones own style and work as well as how honest one is with where it has all come from and that it is all valid.

ts-larking In reply to Boggleboy [2011-02-04 22:49:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes this is so true! You will have to forgive me, for the Henson/Froud comparison!

...But yes I understand what you're saying, and glad you do understand it's meant as a great compliment. As far as I am concerned, it is actually the 'basic technique' that I was reminded of in reference to the others, and not so much the actual style, which is totally your own. Yet even that technique is rare to see, and I can only imagine how much work goes into it.

What you say does make me wonder if more people will be reminded of Ms. Law from my own work! lol Well as you say, I hope not to let that stop me from doing something I love. In some of my work (which isn't yet posted here) I've also been compared to Rackham - so it will be interesting to see how many various artist influences are mentioned!

I wonder, what would you say are the things that help artists to grow into their "own vision?" It always seems to be that one magical part of an artists 'coming of age' that is just so elusive, unless you're incredibly lucky right off the bat and have such a clear vision that it simply comes to you. For me it has not been super easy, rather a long process, of trying many things out - simply because I have always been enthralled with many artists and styles. It has taken me time to focus - though my confidence has grown over time. That said, hopefully not "ego."

and btw, thank you for your thoughts!

Boggleboy In reply to ts-larking [2011-02-05 04:03:26 +0000 UTC]

Oh I wasn't put off by the comparison at all! As I say, I consider it a very high compliment as I truly love their work- Henson and the Frouds- and hope to one day actually meet the Frouds myself- I still feel so sad that Jim died when he did. Please, don't feel as though you must apologize at all- there's nothing to forgive in the comparison! On the contrary, it still means a very great deal to me. They- the aforementioned artists- mean a lot to me and so to know that what I do makes folks feel the same way they do when they view the work of these masters makes me feel good.

You'll find your way- and actually some of making the vision your own really is a bit of ego, but that's really okay too. It's like being an actor: if you didn't have a little bit more ego than some as well as the desire to be the center of attention even to a small degree as well as the desire to entertain then you wouldn't be an artist. Your vision will out!

Something else you say rings true: "...simply because I have always been enthralled with many artists and styles." That's good to a point, but then you sort of have to leave off marveling at their worlds and just focus on your own. I have some periods wherein I wander about through my books and through the images available on the Internet- specifically here on DA!- to see what others are up to and to be inspired, but you don't want to spend too much time dreaming of what might be and make it be at your own hands. I see great potential in your work and for you to find your own way, and for the influences that you have to still color your palette but not to dominate. I think you will have your own artistic coming of age to be sure. I'm 44 and I've been creating literally all my life! Ever since I was able to control my motor functions enough to hold a pencil or to mold the clay, I have created.

If you don't mind my asking, how old are you? Have you always done some form of art?
