I have a concept for a story.
A common gritty and grimy setting is post-apocalyptic. I'm thinking a little twist on this by making a post-war. Two sides were at war for a long time, and then one side ended the war by unleashing a deadly virus. Within a day, the opposing side was eliminated (the virus would have a suicide gene to prevent it from harming those who unleashed it).
The virus didn't kill everyone, the story is focused on the survivors who are trying to live fending off both raiders and invaders.

but the virus does not in fact have the fool proof suicide gene... the survivors figure this. they know that strains of the virus have mutated and the threat can not only be reversed but also exploited for saving what remains of the original idea of rapprochement that they had worked so hard on, but now its a question of survival...

The virus mutates to a weaker virus, one that isn't as fatal, but deadly never the less.
The victorous side of the war works to contain the virus and at the same time, try to recover valuable technology and survivors.
Don't forget to check the post below.

Rough Concept cont:
In this world, .005% of the human race are born with physic ablities. They are forced into the military and serve as elite forces. Types of physics.
Pushers: Move objects with mind. Effected heavily by distance, but is devestating in close combat.
Whisperers: Send telepathic messages and/or hear a person's surface thoughts.
Prophets: Precog ablities, must be able to predict 10 seconds ahead at any time before being send to the field.
Augmenters: Uses mental focus to enhance/alter physical characteristics.
Specialists: Physic abilities that don't fall into the other categories.

Hey Arkane, yeah, thanks for reminding me... I had just forgotten about it for so long and it has certainly improved by leaps and bounds since it first started. Other than the fact that I am living in self-imposed seclusion, mostly, these days, so I have all the time to browse... but it sure does spur me on to make an effort with my own art work... I am doing some quick illustrations (2 hours each) for a fiction piece in a magazine... spending more time on them is not viable because of the remuneration involved... so I am going to find some inspiration from the speed paintings I see here on
cheers

Hey Arkane, sorry for not writing back earlier. Have you read Zen Mind Beginners Mind, by Shunryu Suzuki? The modalities suggested in this book but located in a gritty and grimy environment could make for an interesting experiment. Would you be interested in thinking of a story which explores this? I could send you the book in pdf. Just wondering...
cheers
