i mostly use sculpey. sometimes i'll throw fimo in there, but it's only if that's what's on sale / that's what i have.

I bought some yesterday and noticed the blocks were hard. Is it just that you have to work it with your hands first or do you have to find softer blocks of clay?

which brand was it?
sculpey, overall, is softer than fimo.
fimo soft is ALMOST there, but not quiet. i don't like fimo for that reason.
to make the clay moldable, you have to warm it up. which means lots of working it in your hands. if you have naturally cold hands, you can buy 'clay softener' which is liquid that comes in a little eyedropper sort of bottle. you add a drop and work it into your clay, and it'll soften it up for you to be able to work with it.
