Hey. I don't have a LiveJournal account, but I was wondering if I could say a little something about your fanfics in here instead.

Firstly, I love the way your portray the characters - not once have I encountered anything that has felt out of character in any way. The dialogue is heartfelt, clever and often funny as hell. The way you describe the interactions between the characters is just priceless, and I adore the size of your vocabulary (especially since I'm not a native English speaker myself - never hurts to learn some new words!).

If you don't mind a little critique, however, one thing I would maybe focus on is the more storydriven and action filled sequences. You put so incredible detail into the dialogue and the character interactions, and yet you seem to be in a little rush to get to places whenever the cases (which I have enjoyed story-wise). Maybe you could take a little time to set the scene where the action is happening. Is it dark? Light? What does the space look like? I'm not saying you should spend the entire chapter focusing on the material of the sofa the characters are sitting on, but some details would be nice. Now whenever there's anything going on in the story, I feel a bit like being blindfolded. When you mention i.e. someone looking out of a window or sitting on a chair, what's going through my mind is "there's a window? I didn't know there was a window. Are there any more windows? Are the wind- wait, where did the chair come from?? Is it near the window I didn't know existed? Why is nobody letting me see what's going on?!"

Do you get at all what I'm trying to say here? I'm afraid I'm not very good at explaining stuff... The point I'm trying to make is that if you could try and describe some of the surroundings, the reader can have a clearer picture of what's happening. Because really, when it comes down to the characters and the dialogue (that are the most important part anyway at least in my opinion), I really haven't a single word of complaint. Not a one. Your stories are just an inch away from being pretty much perfect.

I really really hope you don't take this the wrong way, because I don't mean it in a bad way. I just love your fics and hope you keep writing them. Thank you for the good times,

- Rela

Hi there! Glad you've enjoyed the stories

Yes, I'm certainly focusing more on descriptions when writing original materialΒ - but a lot of it seems rather redundant in fan fiction, when one assumes that readers are familiar with the layout of rooms from the show, and so forth. I'll keep your comments in mind, though - thank you!

Erm, that comment got kinda long... Me + late hour with a lot of time to kill + a couple of PDF's of your fics = rambling. Lots of rambling. (and the occasional fangirl squee)

I came to your fanfics through br0-Harry's art and I love them. They have what feels like a very true voice for the characters. They're vividly plotted, well written and very arousing and I commend your extensive vocabulary

The podfics are very welcome too

Thank you for the happy hours.

I've just started to read your fics and holy freaking crap you're talented.Β  You're an amazing writer and you pinned down the characters so well. You've got me back into reading, though to find someone who will be as talented as you will be hard.
Keep up the epic fics. =]

Oh, hello again! Different name, but I recognise that jellyfish

I'm happy to advise that the Sherlock fandom is PARTICULARLY blessed in terms of talent - there is some awesome stuff out there. I know you're on FF.net, but I'd recommend checking out AO3 too, if you haven't already, as several excellent writers post only on there and I wouldn't want you to miss out.

Have fun!!! (And thank you!)

Oh, thank you, that's really kind - and thank you for the Llama Badge!

I'm not sure that Season 3 will be inspirational in the fanfic sense, judging from the spoilers I haven't been able to resist so far.

I am working on something post S1, though S1 was so easy to pick up from and run in whatever direction you wanted!

WhatItMeansToBeHuman In reply to verityburns [2013-04-27 00:18:38 +0000 UTC]

Mmmm, true, especially with that IDIOT John getting married...
...WHAT? John, you belong with Sherlock!!
XD

(I haven't been able to avoid the spoilers either, it's terrible!! >_<'')

Oooooh, can't wait to see what you'll come up with ^^

by the way, have you ever seen the series Merlin?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

verityburns In reply to WhatItMeansToBeHuman [2013-04-27 07:50:51 +0000 UTC]

Aww, poor John - I'm afraid I can't bring myself to begrudge him any happiness he's managed to find. At least in the wonderful world of fanfic, we can choose to ignore it

I watched most of Merlin with the kids and quite enjoyed it - hoping to see Colin Morgan (together with the wonderful Roger Allam) at 'The Globe' this summer... fingers crossed that works out!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WhatItMeansToBeHuman In reply to verityburns [2013-04-27 08:35:37 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know! I really wanted to go see him too, apparently he's fantastic in his role! (and I'm sure Roger Allam is fantastic too, Cabin pressure has made me adore him ^^)
Too bad I can't go because of my exams!! >_<''
...at least I still get Benedict Cumberbatch coming to Graham Norton...Can't wait!

I'm so curious to see how Moffat and Gatiss will tackle John's wedding and, well, especially Sherlock's return.
There will definitely be a punch involved, in my opinion
(though an angsty reunion with some shouting/kissing/punching/making out would have been real nice, too bad it exists only in fan fiction...^^)

Wow it's sure been a while, huh? I've been a bit out of the Sherlock fandom recently due to the lack of...episodes, really, so I haven't got the chance to read your fanfictions. I've started writing my book and worked on a lot of projects for TV series, too, so there's that. But I will still go back and review your stories one of these days, just you wait!

Until then, a happy birthday to you!

*giggles* I probably shouldn't be - I feel like a bit of a fraud on DA because I really cannot draw at all. My oldest had an 'etch-a-sketch' when he was little and asked me to draw him an elephant. I did my best. He looked at it, said, "Never mind, Mummy," and wandered off. Never asked me again. He was three.

Well as as writer you can certainly claim legitimate acreage on dA, even though it's not the best platform for this medium. It is however, a great place to lurk and peruse all the amazing Sherlock fan art as well as many other fine illustrations. I've been on dA for over four years now, mainly to do that very thing. I art digitally, but only very occasionally. The written word is also my preferred form of expression.

Varietyburns,

I hope you don't mind, but I drew up a scene from your short fic: Five Times Sherlock Had Coffee... and One Time He Had John Instead. I put a link to your livejournal account on my comments, but I wanted to make sure it was okay with you to post it. You can find it here: [link]

I just came here from your profile on fanfiction.com (where I can't comment on) - just to say: you owe me two nights of sleep lavished on reading through almost all your fics! I'm sure somewhere in eternal life there would be a proper punishment for that waiting for you. Like muffin and coffee and new Sherlock story every day for instance

I hope you get me right: I would have given much more than just two nights for being JUST AS TALENTED as you are.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

verityburns In reply to Danlef [2012-08-15 06:25:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, if it's any consolation at all (probably not!) I have lost many more than two nights of sleep while writing them
Plus, there are very many things at which I am completely and utterly hopeless (drawing being one.)
And I didn't even discover this 'talent' until I was in my forties, which gives me a kind of 'WTF were you doing all those years?!' feeling!
But thank you!!
