Your vectors have come a long way, that chevelle is killer man! Good job!
There are many different ways to do vectors, but it really depends on what you want.
Most of my vectors are t-shirt designs, which I like to use solid colors/no gradients.
I like to draw the individual shapes with the pen/pencil tools.
I have done the gradient mesh before and Frank is about the best one on here. [link]
He also posts links for youtube tutorials for just about everything he does and they are very helpful. Stick with it man and you will definitely grow.
