They all embody something that to me is at the heart of great art, more as people who create things and what that means, rather than their technical application or subject matter. Great art is something that is made by people, by special people as they exist in opposition or balance with the world, internally or externally. The individual skill sets,( which are really only the tools for communication) are not responsible for how wonderful the art is. It is something inside them that can't be quantified. I admire them as people who ultimately create amidst strife as successfully as in ideal conditions.

That's an interesting approach...of course, those 3 artists were (are) all virtuosos with their respective tools.

I just attended a Van Gogh exhibit in Denver which you probably would have liked. They couldn't get a lot of his major works, so instead they concentrated on his development as an artist. He really struggled and tried tons of different techniques and styles, and then in the last 2 years of his life, he just seemed to have an internal explosion. It was like he finally mastered the tools that were the right ones to express his inner vision. Walking into that last gallery literally gave me chills. It was brilliant. So I guess I'm thinking that mastering your "individual skill set" is an important part of making the art "wonderful".

If you read his letters, he always struggled, but it was a struggle to communicate the power of the world around him with color. He was deeply spiritual, and it was his way of walking with God. He saw God in everything, at least that is how he described it. He is the most prolific artist ever. Over 900 major works in a career that lasted less than 10 years. Amazing. They were not all good either. We see them as good because he made them and we recognize his hand in all of them, and that they are a part of the process that led to genius. He became a virtuoso only by applying his craft to communicate that "thing" inside himself, to become a more fluent communicator in his chosen medium of expression.
