I want to try silverpoint but i can tfind any silver. May i ask where you get yours?

I just use plain old sterling silver. I got it at a jewelry supply place. They sell various gauge wire by the ounce which translates to quite a bit of wire actually, almost a lifetime supply. That's the cheapest way. A good, well stocked craft store might have some. If you can find a jewelry crafter they might have some scraps of wire that will work nicely for experimenting. Past that Natural Pigments has a silverpoint set and inch long replacement wires. They call it dead soft wire. I think that means it's fine silver instead of sterling (.999 as opposed to .995) and honestly it's grossly overpriced. Other than that take a look at the Silverpoint Web. It might have something.

I've just taken up silverpoint recently and have been admiring your work. I need to post some soon too; inspired by what you've done so far and looking forward to seeing more. Personally I'm scared to death to start a portrait but heck, I think its time You've handled these beautifully!

Thanks and thanks for dropping by and commenting.
Go for the portrait, you'll be fine. And if not what's the worst that can happen -- you trash a piece of paper, but you gain experience. A fair trade. I have an extra large trash can personally.

Strange you should mention that. I've never been much of a fan of the Pre-Raphs, but I find myself going that way more and more lately. Time to rethink them?

Don't reconsider. Should need be you can always rethink about the name you want to give your work
I do see some resemblance though. [link]

Oh no, I'm not thinking of changing what I do, too much left to do yet. I'm just thinking maybe I should take another, closer look at the Pre-Raphs.

Cant wait to see more.

whichwaysup In reply to hawkmauk [2008-01-14 16:32:15 +0000 UTC]

I love silverpoint. It just has a certain quality that nothing else has, unfortunately that quality doesn't really translate to photography and then the net too well.
I've actually have quite a bit of new work to be put up but my camera died and the scanner is pretty sick too. So stay tuned, plenty of new stuff coming soon I hope.

hawkmauk In reply to whichwaysup [2008-01-14 19:23:27 +0000 UTC]

I quite agree, its a real pleasure to work with though I find it takes a lot longer to produce drawings using it.
I am still trying to find a surface that im comfortable with though and wondered if you had any advice on that front, the last piece I produced on a stretched canvass with a gesso/watercolour primer but found it too coarse to get a good line. I have used some of the ground available from silverpointweb before which was very good but not very convienient.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

whichwaysup In reply to hawkmauk [2008-01-14 23:05:21 +0000 UTC]

I work on paper with a gouache ground usually. White gouache with or without a little tinting works pretty well and isn't too much trouble. Stretching paper is second nature to me from all the watercolors I've done so that's no problem. My suggestion would be gouache on a hot pressed watercolor paper or a 2 or 3 ply bristol board. If you don't like that I've got some other possibilities, but to me this one works best.

Well, you need more coverage, I really like your art.

And, I think it's really nice what your doing for Lisa and Jen. <3

whichwaysup In reply to kyouzamashi-ryouko [2007-09-05 14:46:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. There's been a jump in views the last week so maybe the coverage is coming regardless of lack of promotion.

As for Lisa and Jen, it's no big thing to me. I wish I could do more actually.

I saw you were starting AP art classes, I'd offer to help, but you should know I didn't do all that well in art classes, so take any of my advice at your own risk.

Heh, I can need all the help I can get. My art teacher is really pushing me to get a 5.

Are you at an art school?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

whichwaysup In reply to kyouzamashi-ryouko [2007-09-05 17:17:21 +0000 UTC]

Art school was long ago and far away. Learned way more, and more relevant stuff since. If you think I can help, I'll try.

What's it take to get a 5. Seems to me what you got would depend a whole lot on who did the judging. I remember a guy back in high school who did a really nice piece in freshman or sophomore year. He entered it in a contest the first year -- rejected, second year, same piece, same contest -- rejected again, Senior year, entered the same piece a third time and got a prize.

That's really reasurring. ...Not.

Well, I'm really not as worried about the AP class as I am getting into The Florida School of the Arts. I've going October 19th to show my portfolio, and I'm so nervous about it.

whichwaysup In reply to TroubleShark [2007-08-05 14:29:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for stopping by, glad you like the stuff. There's a link to my blog a couple messages down if you'd like to look in there. It's been neglected lately, hopefully that will change soon.

I knew going in that this wasn't really a hot spot for traditional art, that's fine. I haven't really gone out of my way to get noticed either so I'm really doing better than I expected.
