Not a problem at all! I'm super happy to hear that you like the Elsa and Jack print, and thanks for letting me know! Hope you're having fun at the convention! O(∩_∩)O Keep an eye out here on dA or on my website for that picture when I upload it after Fanime!

Yeah, I was wondering why Jack wasn't there. (There were two versions at Fanime too, right?) Actually, it was my friend who pointed it out when I showed her--she was angry she didn't see the print when she was at Fanime, since she wanted it, too. =u=;;

zhenyue In reply to sabanoodles [2014-05-26 05:49:49 +0000 UTC]

Yep, there are two versions! Aw, I wish she could have swung by and said hi too! Will she be at the con tomorrow? If not, tell her to note me here and we can always ship a print to her ^^

Sadly, no. (Well, at this point, I think it's pretty obvious she didn't make it, seeing as Fanime is over) We have finals coming up so we could only go on Saturday. :c

Hello and thank you very much for notifying me! I definitely love it; you have a definite from me again. I really like your eye for overall feeling (感覺很好,不知道怎麼翻譯). In this piece, I like the effect created by the abundance of round patterns in the leaves, feathers, etc. combined with the narrow, vertical composition. Great choice of color too, as always. I had no idea that papercuts could be done with something as heavy as cardstock. My mental image is still the traditionally thin kind of paper. How does the heavier paper affect your papercutting?

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to zhenyue [2014-05-18 04:13:56 +0000 UTC]

Hello again.

And thank you very much for replying (and adding this piece to your list of favourites.) And most important of all, thank you very much for your very insightful comments. I appreciate them very, very much!

Papercutting, as an art, has been done by a great number of people around the world. The raw material changes from place to place, from thin rice paper all the way to parchment. Cardstock is a bit of a new material available. I find that it's a little more forgiving to work with than rice paper. A small mistake will likely not jeopardize the whole project quite as much. It also makes it easier to travel, too - I can take my work with me without worrying too much during transit. It does limit what you can do with the paper, however. Smaller details do not show up quite as nicely and rounded edges are difficult to achieve with cardstock due to the thicker paper. So at the end it is a trade off.

For me... rice paper is almost entirely unavailable due to where I live. Therefore I must do what I can with what I have. I've only gravitated to cardstock recently myself. If you look through my history, I've gone through a number of different papers. And I've said it before, the search for the perfect paper continues!

Thank you very much for the kind comments and thank you very much for adding my works to your list of favourites! I really appreciate your support. To the best of my ability, I will work forward to bring you more Chinese-themed papercuts.

Your works definitely deserve it, and the pleasure is mine to support your papercutting. I have a small collection of papercuts I've accumulated over the years, but it would be nice to contribute to the art as you do. Would you happen to have any suggestions for starting papercutting?

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to zhenyue [2014-03-19 01:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Once again, thank you very much for your very kind words.

Do I have any suggestions for starting a papercut...
...well, in a way, yes. I wrote this article earlier last year: fav.me/d6jk5ut as a way to introduce the dA community to the more traditional forms of papercutting (it saddens me and gladdened me at the same time knowing that there is a small group of artists on dA that produce Chinese-themed papercuts, but the number is really small.) I have also included a number of tutorials at the bottom which might help. The communal aspect of Chinese papercutting is that the older patterns themselves are not regulated, as there were no "original artists" to be found. It means it's perfectly OK to pick up old traditional patterns to practice with. And I usually tell people to start with simpler patterns and go "big" at the beginning, then gradually work your way to more complicated works on a smaller scale.

I hope this helps!

Thank you very much for your advice. I'll definitely take a look at your article when I have the chance to give papercutting a shot, and I'll keep your advice for researching Chinese opera in mind too. If you've got some resources you can recommend for learning about opera, I'd really appreciate it! English or Chinese is fine. I'll do my best in terms of being one of the fans that keep these ancient art forms alive, and I look forward to your future works.

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to zhenyue [2014-04-09 00:59:50 +0000 UTC]

Hello again!
And you are very welcome.

As far as resources for studying Peking Opera is concerned, there are a few places to go on line. For the absolute starter, the Wikipedia has a passable entry-level article that is written from an English perspective. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peking_o… It also has links to more specific aspects of the opera as an art form. So it's always a good place to start. For a Chinese source, here's something that you might enjoy as a way to enter the world. media.huayuworld.org/culture/c… It offers a lot of vocabulary that can be used as a starting point to look further into the field. Sometimes the first step in entering into a new field of study is to learn the vocabulary.

In the meantime, thank you very much for your continued support. If you would like, I can contact you whenever there are new, Chinese-themed projects that have been completed.

zhenyue In reply to creudence [2013-06-08 17:21:54 +0000 UTC]

Busy, so I've had to put off a proper art update until later. Aw, what do you do for your current job? I remember you mentioned you do graphic arts. Did you major in that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

creudence In reply to zhenyue [2013-06-08 18:50:31 +0000 UTC]

I do a lot of cleaning for industry buildings, a lot of chemicals and what not. Not the best pay, but it gets college paid for! Yeah I major in graphic/multimedia/electronic arts, hopefully I get to put it into play soon. But anyways, what has been keeping you busy?

zhenyue In reply to creudence [2013-06-11 05:02:10 +0000 UTC]

Paying for college is what's most important anyways XD I'm still catching up on commissions and getting everything sorted out.

Gosh, I bet you do get a lot of commissions, you are darn good ^.^ Although I do bet that it can get a little overwhelming sometimes So I guess everything that has to be sorted out is the deviantart account and what not?

zhenyue In reply to creudence [2013-06-12 04:37:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks~ There are lots of things I finished for the convention but haven't posted to the deviantArt yet, plus I have to organize everything and do a post-con leftover sale. There are lots of things I'm discounting to make space for new things.

zhenyue In reply to creudence [2013-06-13 02:09:45 +0000 UTC]

I always keep stock on hand for online sales and future conventions, but the post con sale will feature specials, mostly for slightly damaged prints, retiring items, and other reduced price items.

You're quite talented, sweetie~! Would love to see more traditional though.. I'm not really a digital type of person (mostly because I don't understand how it's done on a difficulty level compared to traditional art).. Let me know if you start doing more traditional. I'd love to see what you can do.
