After modelling some floating lanterns, I modelled some sky lanterns
. ....in this scene I used both; 178 lights, 6,5 hours render time.Vue 10 Infinite; postwork in PS CS5

EDIT: Some of you have suggested adding some more depth to the lanterns to enhance the 3D effect. Thanks guys for the great tip; mission completed

my name is Katie and i am a student in England studying Animation and Layout and what not. i find your work beautiful and inspiring and i was wandering if it would be all right of me to study some of your work? what i mean by that is i would like to take this particular piece of work and paint it, but not digitally but using traditional media (oil Paints). i wont be publishing the work and even if i will it will be fully credited. so no copyrights would be breached. i would like to do it just for my own pleasure and educational purposes only. hope its all right and let me know if you are against it and wouldn't want me doing so.

Sky lanterns are real. When the candle is lit, the density decreases and it flies up into the air like in the picture. If you want, you could try to light up a bunch of them to see something similar to this. It's illegal to launch a sky lantern in some parts though. :/
