Shadi is watching as a storm moves over the city of Sirath, where she lives. Usually she likes storms, they make her feel free, and she loves the mix of excitement and fear she feels when standing in the fury of the elements.Β This one is different though, this time she's afraid.Shadi gets all the best cityscapes.
I noticed that my most recent works were a bit lacking in details, not to mention it's been a while since I drew a cityscape, so this drawing was a perfect opportunity to do both. Despite some perspective issues I'm really happy with the result, also because this was the first time I drew a stormy sky with lightning.

Thank you so much for the insight! I have to agree completely, I also noticed this trend on my drawings, and now I'm trying a bit to solve it by making the backgrounds less vibrant. I had never thought about doing it digitally, though, that's a great suggestion! I'll definitely have to try that!
Good point about the contrast too, I'll have to look into that, together with the other things you mentioned. Being self taught these fundamental skills can be a problem, I suppose I'll have to find some youtube videos and spend time just practicing.

Ahhh I love your full illustrations! the coloring is so spot on, I think you nailed that lighting that is sort of dim but not really dark either which proceeds a storm when the clouds start to gather up. I get the feeling the storm hasn't reached it's full wrath yet, at least where Shadi is standing, because it seems rather calm still, despite of the wind starting to grow stronger (those leaves and Shadi's scarf are really a clever way to show the wind!) Also the background is super beautiful as always (minor perspective issues don't stand out that much in my opinion)! there is so much detail.. x.x I especially like how well the dome roof in the bg stands out because of it's color, and how well that color goes with the stormy sky behind it!
Simply gorgeous piece, I love it!

The movement in the clouds is so beautiful and there's great tension in the whole scene. If anything, I feel for this scene the shadows could be deeper to emphases the foreboding nature of the storm.

I'm slightly annoyed by how everything is normal bright instead of storm-dark.
But other than that, it's a pretty good piece

When I colored I was thinking the storm was still on the horizon, so went for normal lighting. In hindsight I should have made it darker indeed.

Probably because a shit ton of enemy ships docked near the coast and a host of 20, 000 is marching to lay siege to the town
Jesus Olaf, the colors on this are amazing. Love the contrast between the architecture from the run down foreground to the majestic blue dome in the background. Lighting looks incredible as well as the clouds and the scene does have a ominous feel to it. What kind of architecture are you using for this place? Pre Reconquista Moorish Spain? Classic Arabic from the Abbasidian period? Marrocan? Post Sassanid Persian?

Believe me if I say I have no clue, I don't know much about Middle Eastern / Islamic architecture, despite loving it. I used several orientalist paintings as references though, mainly from Gustav Bauernfeind and Jean-Lèon Gérôme.

This is epic!!. really captures the tension right before the storm. the lighting perfectly edged against the darkening sky. the furry posed over the roof top surveying his home. there is certainly a story here I love it so much thanks for sharing

Very cool, 0laff! I love the concept. You did a great job of showing how blustery it is. I think the only criticism I can think of would be to blend in the colors of the clouds a bit more. Make the transitions smoother. Otherwise, it's a suspenseful picture.
