Description Late Christmas sketch!
Another cat, I know, but drawing them is so much fun, what can I do about it?? It seems they are more appreciated than those boring humans anyways...

I'm not sure if you can see it but I made some style experiment, trying to draw him in a less cartoony way, with also different fur and facial structure. I'd really like to know what you think about it, so any feedback is appreciated.
That weird weapon he's holding is an African sickle sword (different sources call it Mambeli or Mambele, not sure which is the right one), here you can see some examples  www.vikingsword.com/vb/attachm…
Since I absolutely LOVE sickle swords I decided my cat race will use a lot of similar weird weapons.

You are very fond of the shotel, I think. Ever considered the hunga-munga? It was a favorite of the continent as well and a deadly weapon in melee as well as when thrown.

I really like Central African weapons in general, they are really fascinating! ^^

Yep, I drew that a couple times!

Dude, your idea to give your cats sickle swords is brilliant! This will greatly enhance the sense that they have their own culture, distinct from the others.

Regarding the style, I loved this, but I also love your regular one. Personally, you can go either way and I will still like it just as much. Though I think when it comes to expressions, I find your regular style better suited for the job. But I can't say for sure, I'd have to see more of this style to tell for certain.

Thank you, I'm really glad you like the idea! I plan to give them culture, clothing and weaponry that is about a mix of Central African people and Amazonian Indios, I hope it will turn out not too bad. ^^

Yeah, probably my usual style is better to convey emotions, still the way I did the nose and the flatter forehead here are details I'm going to keep, they give an even more feline look. ^^

Isn't the correct name for that sword a Khepesh?
Just knit picking

Nope, the khopesh is a differnt weapon, even if both are considered Sickle swords.   The khopesh is used like a sabre, while the mambeli is a much more recent weapon (it was used until the 20th century) and the part used for cutting is the "internal" edge, like a sickle.

Thank you so much, mate!   I'm glad you like the design of that sword, in my opinion African weapons are some among the weirdest and more fascinating in the world, also because we don't even know much about them and their use.  So, I'll definitely draw more of them with my cats.

I mean, just look at these weapons here, they are awesome! c2.staticflickr.com/4/3569/337…

this kinda sword is freaking cool mate !
you've done a good job on this one ! we can see a difference like if your character is getting more and more mature in your head !
that's a really good point !

I know I'ill be like the party pooper xD but it seems like the handle of the weapon is twisted at the extremity

you've made a great job on this one congrats ! .-.

Glad you like it, thank you a lot!   Yeah, I'm looking at different artists and taking the things I like from everyone, I'm experimenting.

Yeah, I wanted to give it a slightly curved handle, like a sabre, but it ended up looking not really well.

Hello:
Any anthro race can be more appreciated than those pesky humans, trust me, we Cylons know what we say .

Personally I have never considered your style to cartoony, except maybe for those joke sketches you have made, but they are jokes so it is a welcomed change of style to lighten the mood .

The changes in the facial structures can be very hard to achieve because I think we don't want to run the risk of make an anthro race to lose the look and be like another species. But you have done it right .

Also, what style of clothing is he using?

I love the idea of making your felines use a unique style of weapon because that gives them far better sense of identity. I like that! .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

0laffson In reply to Chiletrek [2015-12-26 23:36:37 +0000 UTC]

hahaha darn Cylons want us all dead! XD  And sometimes they even forget they are NOT human....

I actually aim for a pretty realistic style but... dunno, my cats always look too much cartoon-ish for my taste   I'm glad you like the face though, I always have the problem of making the muzzle too long!
And I'm happy you like the idea of the weapons too! I thought having them use Central African weapons would give them a different "cultural look" opposed to all the humans with renaissance-like armaments around.

Chiletrek In reply to 0laffson [2015-12-27 00:36:16 +0000 UTC]

Hello:
Well, let's just say that Bother Cavil was crazy XD .

Don't complain too much because your style looks awesome, but you can always keep on experimenting to see what can you come up with ... but really, look at your sketches and compare them with my sketches and drawings, that will give you enough reasons for you to not complain XD.

About the muzzle? yeah, that is a problem, specially in side-views, because it can give the impression of a big head in an humanoid body (the the "head rules for proportions").

Yeah, I like it indeed , and it is cool that decision because those are very different styles that will certainly be noticeable in your stories as your races interact .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

0laffson In reply to SpectrumGuardians [2015-12-26 23:25:03 +0000 UTC]

The khopesh is a sickle sword too, that's why they are similar.   The main difference between the two is the position of the edge, which in the mambeli is in the "internal" part of the curvature, and it was used indeed like a sickle instead than like a sabre.

0laffson In reply to Idonataur [2015-12-26 23:22:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Indeed, there are hundreds or weird weapons that are never used in fantasy (or else) that in my opinion would look much better than all those impractical things you usually see...

Idonataur In reply to 0laffson [2015-12-27 02:52:50 +0000 UTC]

I absolutely agree. And, with all the beautiful designs for swords that already exist, why would you discard centuries of history and throw together a bunch of stuff that you just thought looked cool?

HunterBeingHunted [2015-12-26 18:17:56 +0000 UTC]

Is that random cat character of your cat species, or Enorach drawn in a diff way?
I think this kinda facial structure works fine! He looks just as awesome as that badass sickle sword!

I think the different facial structure brings variety to the cats you're drawing, but I'd imagine this is only one kinda facial structure for them, and the way you draw  Enorach's face usually would go with it as well (I think the style change is slight enough to do that),both being a little different 'face designs'.. i hope you get what I mean xD

0laffson In reply to HunterBeingHunted [2015-12-26 23:20:56 +0000 UTC]

Random cat.   Glad you like both the cat AND the sword!
I get what you mean, also because I always struggle to make my cat faces different from one another!

Oh, I wanted to ask you a thing, I hope not to bother you.  When you upload a comic page you post it in high resolution but change the "display option" on DA (where it says the size) or do you post it already resized?  Because I have my page ready but I don't know what's better....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HunterBeingHunted In reply to 0laffson [2015-12-27 00:47:29 +0000 UTC]

No you are not bothering me (plus i can't wait to see your page!) I always upload kinda high resolution version and then it suggests the lower resolution to be shown, or then I choose the lower resolution for showing
I dunno actually which one would be better, but I do that mostly cos then I need just one file size that is both good for uploading and for printing.
I will most likely to do a printed booklet for my own amusement when I get the project done,  as I am fairly sure I won't publish.. . but I guess I should keep the option open.

0laffson In reply to HunterBeingHunted [2015-12-28 12:28:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you a lot for your advice!   I'll post it quite soon, maybe tomorrow or the day after.

Well, your comic is great, and I'm honestly surprised it didn't get more attention (here on DA the "success" you have is often more based on luck than one person's skills, sadly) so you should indeed keep that option open.
....I'm eagerly waiting for the ending, by the way, and I'm terrified by it at the same time.

HunterBeingHunted In reply to 0laffson [2016-01-03 18:05:14 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess i should advertise my comic more maybe I do so more when the whole thing is done? not sure.. but with each page submitted I usually gain few watchers

hehhe! (will add a epilogue to the comic btw, cos i think people wanna know how the war ends and if i was to show the whole outcome of war it would take zillion pages so.. yeah, at first I almost decided to leave the epilogue out and leave the ending be more open on certain pats, with only hints for how things will go..)

Send it to hundreds of groups!   Spam them with every page! (It really works)

Damn, I'm SO curious about the ending! It's been an awesome and long journey, I'll really miss this comic when you'll finish it!

HunterBeingHunted In reply to 0laffson [2016-01-11 13:08:53 +0000 UTC]

ahaha XD I might try that one day..

well I think I will still keep drawing maybe mini comics and works with my characters in them after i am done with the actual story.
And ofc I am hoping to start a completely new story! maybe even an improved one! (I've learned a lot while making my comic and it still has things I don't quite like, but don't want to/can't change without making too sudden drastic changes)
