Kicking the stray pebble in front of him, Hiccup scowled as he continued down the path. He couldn’t get the strange, white haired boy out of his mind; how he had lingered at the back of the ring during dragon training, weaving between viking and dragon alike, then disappearing before Hiccup could even get close to him, or ask him any questions. But strangest of all? No-one else had seemed to notice him. He had gone around, asking all his friends there if they’d ever seen him around the village, but all he got was blank looks, or an interrogation about his mental health. To be fair, Ruffnut and Tuffnut had been too busy banging heads the whole time and Snotlout admiring his own reflection in his shield, but Hiccup had thought Astrid or at least Fishlegs had been paying enough attention to have spotted him.
’Maybe you saw a ghost,’ Astrid had suggested, after he had collapsed in a frustrated huff on the ground. ‘Completely white hair? Disappearing without a trace? Sounds supernatural to me.’
’I never picked you to be the superstitious type, Astrid,’ Hiccup had commented; but now he couldn’t get that theory out of his head either. His search for answers had only given him more questions, so he had wandered off on his own after feeding Toothless, to give him some time to think and try and make sense of the afternoon.
A snowflake planting itself on his nose disturbed Hiccup, and he paused to wipe it off. “I thought it was only supposed to hail this time of year,” he commented to himself, frowning. “We’ve had our 9-month-long blizzard already…”
A voice cut through his own, stopping Hiccup dead in his tracks. “Sorry, that would be me,” it said, sounding light and casual. Before the young viking had any chance to look around for its source, a face floated down in front of him, obscenely close and white, with a grin from ear to ear. “Can’t help it sometimes, I have my own backdrop of snowflakes-“
Hiccup made a sound between and yell and a squeak as he leapt back from the boy, almost falling over his legs (one of which he was still getting used to). A split second later he recognised him as the white-haired boy, and another split second he realise he was floating, floating upside down in front of him.
“Who— you— what are you?!”
The boy’s grin swiftly disappeared, to be replaced by a look of pure shock. Hiccup watched aghast as he righted himself in the air, noting the large staff he carried, and the lazily drifting snowflakes that seemed to be following him in the air. “Wait- wait a minute,” he started, as eyes of a startling blue darted over him, “can you hear— can you see me?”
Hiccup took a step back, body tensed, then nodded. His mind whirred, trying to piece together what was happening; should he be seeing him? How was this boy floating? Why did he look almost as pale as the snow surrounding him?
Then it hit him - Astrid’s words came rushing back to him, replaying in his mind.
’Maybe you saw a ghost.’
“No, no no no,” Hiccup began, taking more hurried steps back. “This can’t be happening. I— you— you’re not real. You don’t exist.”
The ghost-boy started, then his eyes widened in what Hiccup would realise later to be fear. “No wait, listen!” he replied, panic tinging his voice. “I’m real! I’m really real!” He floated after Hiccup, his grip on the staff tightening.
Hiccup made a noise in his throat, backing up even faster. “No,” he repeated, as if reassuring himself. “You’re not. This isn’t happening, I’m dreaming, or hallucinating, but you’re not real, you can’t be-“
“No stop!” the boy almost yelled, cutting him off again. “Believe in me! I’m real! This is all real!” He flew towards him rapidly, and outstretched a pure white hand, reached towards Hiccup as if to grab him, and Hiccup could feel the cold, the intense cold that emenated from him as he came closer, colder than he had ever felt even the air of Berk to be. “I’m real!”
Hiccup lost all his nerve, and let out a yell of terror, feeling more afraid than even when Toothless has pinned him down when they’d first met. “No you’re not!” he cried in his panicked state, before the hand could reach him. “I won’t believe in you!”
And just like that; the ghost disappeared. Vanished from the air, into nothing. Hiccup fell back onto the ground in shock, his breath coming in short gasps, heart thumping in his ears. He started at the empty space for what seemed like hours but could have only been a few minutes. As his fear ebbed away and his mind calmed, he was reassured; the ghost was gone. Gone, or never existed in the first place. Hiccup had banished it - where he didn’t know, but he was filled with relief all the same. Carefully he pushed himself up, steadying his slightly shaky limbs, and began making his way back to the village, already making himself forget the event had ever occured, that he had ever seen any white-haired boy.

Curled up high in the branches of a tree, watching Hiccup as he departed, Jack Frost began to cry.

DAAAAYUM.
Poor, poor Jack. Good Godric... Hiccup could've been a little more understanding. He was obviously one of those friendly ghosts.

= ?

In fairness I can see hiccup jumping to this conclusion to be the most logical at the time. But then I also see him being smart enough to figure it out later on and having a change of heart (or beliefs?) ~

Ah, indeed. I hope he does get his head in order, being the smarty-pants he is. I can only imagine how Jack felt when he ceased to believe in him.

That would suck.

Yeah jack would probably feel pretty shit for a while ahaha ^^;; But I also think he'd then get a hold of himself and be determined to make hiccup believe in him again - if it happened once, what's to say it can't happen again? (And have it stay that way <3)

AAAAH NO
WHY DID YOU MAKE THE ENDING LIKE THAT.

And I really love your sketch. And the story. ;u; My feels have come back. XDD They have disappeared for quite some time, you see. And then you made them come back. Oh whyyyyy

But seriously, out of all the stories I've seen, this is the only one where Hiccup was so surprised by Jack that he actually was able to un-believe in him (yeah I know it's not a word). Quite an interesting take to it, I have to admit. Are you planning on continuing? :3

I'M SORRYYYYYYY
I KNOW IT'S A KICK IN THE FEELS-GUT

Thank you for the compliment ;V; ;;

I just-- idek I woke up with the idea this morning and needed to get it out before I trashed it. I did work out the stuff before this scene and some stuff after, but tbh I never finish stuff I start like fanfics or anything so this was really meant to be a drabble. If people like it enough though I may consider continuing ;w; ;; My headcanon gets better after this it's not so horribly gut-wrenching

ALSO I'M A SUCKER FOR PEOPLE FREAKING OUT AND GETTING SCARED OF SUPERNATURAL THINGS LIKE SEE EVEN THIS --> [link]

Oh you live in Australia that's cool. I live in the Philippines and it's also night time here, but I'm sure in your place it's very late. Maybe around 12:30am, I'm guessing? It's 9:30pm here.
