Henrique Candino is the son of Brazilian immigrants to the city. The family arrived in the poor southwest neighborhood when he was seven, and they spoke almost no English. Ric learned to pickpocket quickly when he saw what treasures passers-through carried, and he picked up English extremely quickly. A little slip of a boy in his youth, he was fast on his feet and clever, so he was the best breadwinner in the family. His parents had low-paying factory jobs and his younger brother was too young for work at the time.

He, his brother, and the two maned wolf children living in the apartment next to them all decided one day on impulse to take a bus to the city center. The four youngsters spent two and a half days (much to their parents' extreme displeasure) exploring the city and its wealthiest neighborhoods. Looking upon the gorgeous sprawling manors of the east neighborhoods, Henrique vowed that one day he would live in such luxury.

As he and the other children got older they became better organized, and the pickpocketing eventually transformed into blatant robbery. Soon most of the unemployed population around them was involved in some way with their operation. Until the outlawing of alcohol it stayed fairly harmless in relative terms. Then like many clever criminals Ric found a way to profit off the system's stupidity. He reopened the bars and managed to a booze supply from a distant cousin who had recently immigrated to Canada.

As his business grew and flourished, other immigrant populations and even some of the city's generations-old natives began to flock to his establishments. Why? He kept the prices reasonable. Many other crime lords would jack the alcohol price up to make more money, but Ric knew that he could sell more booze for a lower price and foster loyalties with his generosity. He met his beloved wife during one of these chance samplings.

Although the vicious gang war took a heavy toll on his business for a time, he was always able to recover since he had the cheapest liquor in the city. His new partnership with Selaine seemed to bring the city's gang violence to a halt for the better part of a year, but a small dispute over profits eventually exploded into a bitter rivalry. Selaine wanted to pool the profits evenly between them, but Ric felt it made more sense that everyone keep their own profits. He was able to convince her to go along with this, but then he began to sell some of his booze in her bars. She made it clear that unless he was willing to share THOSE profits she would not permit him to do so. The "my booze=my money" versus "my bar=my money" argument continued with no resolution until Selaine finally banned Henrique's booze from her establishments. Taking the insult personally, Ric sent his childhood friend Ferdinand to burn down three of Selaine's bars. The new enemy-ship was brought full circle when one of Ric's better hitmen was found hanging by his foot from the bridge with his throat open. Henrique and Selaine have been bitter rivals since, and the gang wars are back in action.
