Description

[Long description: A dry, sandy path through a canyon. Cliff-dwellings line its walls, alive with smoke and light, while a set of three-toed tracks follow the trail at their base.]

! She's here!

I was very kindly approached by TWWM staff to do banner artwork for Majanthi's greenhouse, back in June, which was a.) extremely my bullshit and b.) very humbling ;_; It was also the perfect excuse to paint some places I've wanted to for a long time.

This isn't a visitable place (at least, not so far as i'm aware) but it is based strongly on Sinagua petroglyphs and cliff-dwellings here in the central highlands of Arizona-- perhaps the most well known of which is, of course, Montezuma Castle.

While the Sinagua left these cliff-dwellings around 1425 AD, I had just read that Montezuma Castle was used by the Yavapai as a home as recently as the late 1500s , and probably continued to be inhabited for some time after that. There are lots of paintings of open and empty desert vistas with these sort of lifeless, people-less adobe ruins, so for this I wanted to create a little snapshot of something warm and alive... I was also very inspired by the town of PaquimΓ© as it appears in the game Mulaka; it is the most inhabited area in the game, with a soundscape that layers the bustling din of commerce and life onto a very plucky and domestic themesong.

Anyway. Easy to conjure up images of ghosts haunting an empty desert-- they do tend to haunt places that were-- but I think that's a little myopic to the people who lived and worked and continue to live and work there.

This is so gorgeous, I was so hyped when I saw this banner for the first time! It's such a loving way to depict this landscape, really beautiful.

Ahhh we visited Montezuma's castle ages ago when I was a tiny Fiach and the memory of it in my mind is so strong. I remember being awestruck by the dramatics of the entire scene (huge cliff, huge structure, all this tenacious and scruffy vegetation sprawling around these massive red rocks and giant blue sky) and wondering "Well why the heck aren't they living in there anymore, what a cool house they get to climb ALL the things, they should live in it again and we can be friends with them and bring tea" it sounded like such a good idea ;n;Β

A brilliant and refreshing take on something usually depicted as so skeletal.
(Also loving this themesong!)

RIGHT...! between Montezuma Castle itself and the well, it's like-- this is it. this is The Perfect Place To Live. I get a similar feeling from seeing maps and reconstructions of hohokam canals and pueblos, but unlike the Castle, we have the entire Phoenix metro rising on the bones of them :'^D so that is... probably looking at it with rose-colored glasses on my part.

Anyway, thank you!! (AND YES... Lienzo did a real bang-up job with the soundtrack, having almost all the elements be something you'd realistically hear in that soundscape. iirc even the violins became a part of tarahumara music when they were introduced this side of the puddle.)

This is awesome! I love the art, and I learned a lot from the description too - what a cool game! I love how you've shown this place as alive and vibrant! The patterns in the sky are also really cool.

!!!!!!!! This is incredible. I love the idea concept, showing the dwelling places of peoples both ancient and present to this very day, and the incredible way that the homes built from the desert blend into and are a part of the desert landscape itself. This is something I definitely don't see in a lot of desert art and it adds so much life to this, just like you said. Also the lovely patterns representing the sun's light overhead...just so incredibly beautiful. Amazing job.

Oh, man, adobe really jives with me for that reason. in mosques, in cliff-dwellings like these, in huge cities like AΓ―t Benhaddou, it feels like they were pulled straight up from the earth's surface. Really awesome architectural style. Anyway-- thank you so much for saying so!!

I never thought of them that way, but that is truly exactly the way they look. Its also amazing how widely spread they are, and how strong and long lasting these structures have proven to be!Β
