Well, in the story, Rosa and Hilda are two completely different people that just happen to act similiar, and get in similiar events on their journey. They have different mothers, come from different hometowns, have different childhood friends, and even look\dress different. Same for Nate and Hilbert.
This is because you're suppose to name them by a name that matches you (more spiritually\feeling wise) in the moment you start to play the game. Not like previous generations, where the main characters were basically you, at least in Generations III and IV. Generations I and II propably too, they were named after colors for a reason.
And while their canonical names are Hilda and Hilbert, some people may think these names do not "match" their headcanon personalities, and call them Touko and Touya, or White and Black, or even make a crossover and change the names to that of someone else from another anime or manga.

Actually, I meant that the protagonist from the B/W was just going to be older, instead of being someone completely else in B2/W2. As some sort of continuation, or something like that. But yeah, I heard of that one too.
