Actually, the protons inside the atom Nucleus are charged positively, whereas the electron cloud encircling the atom is charged negatively, thus, the two are attracted to each other. The neutrons, being neutral, simply help to keep the protons from blowing away from each other. Thus, electromagnetic force contributes to holding the atom together, rather than blowing it apart. While the protons are attempting to fly away from each other, the neutrons in between leave the right amount of distance so as to lesson the repulsion.
Yeah, it's an old design, but it's more symbolic than up-to-date. It's just meant to look cool. Thanks for your kind words and thoughts.
