Personality: (+Sweet, +Cheerful, +Curious, -Anxious, -Sensitive, -Insecure)
Docile Nature (no bonuses) Highly curious.

The one everyone knows the best is online - The vlogger Aquamarine who is bubbly, curious, and highly adventurous. Her passion for exploration is on full display as she babbles to her viewers about her day to day life. Her interests seem like they’re all over the place, ranging from a cute latte she took a picture of to a secret cove she discovered swimming at a beach. Once and a while, her love of the supernatural pokes through in written exerts and spooky photos she shares. But it’s all framed in a saccharine blog. Aqua likes to be cute and frilly on her surface.

Under the persona is Leialoha - quiet, reserved, keeping out of other people’ way. As soon as you put actual faces to these large crowds, she shrivels up and backs herself into a corner. It’s not like online, where you can think and plan what you say. Leialoha is unsure of herself when she speaks aloud and frets about sharing her interests with strangers, because what if they don’t actually find you interesting? Any hint of rejection can leave the girl morose for the rest of the day. Stressing out about every little thing leaves Leialoha tired as well, and she takes abnormally long to recharge. Even good friends will find her to be scarce.

And now, at the root of this shrinking violet is the true mermaid, something in between Aquamarine and Leialoha. It isn’t all a mask: The girl is bubbly and curious, knowledgeable about the world and hungry for more. She is a kind and soft person who wants to hear about your interests as much as she enjoys sharing hers. The mermaid is faithful and empathetic, almost to a fault. Her positive energy is quickly spent. The magikarp values quiet time and needs it often. But because she spent this energy online, she rarely has enough left over for the few friends she has and her family. Perhaps this is why she has so few of either.

At the root of her problem is her loss of identity. Having forgotten who she was, the one thing she knows to be true is that she is a mermaid, and that is something to embrace. She believes the key to relearning who she is must be through retracing her lineage. Always hungry for answers, Aqua has moved to Raccolto, where mermaids abound (relatively), in the hopes of finding herself again.

History

A couple in Alola, Kealohi and John Grey, prayed for a child every night. Despite their numerous and well made attempts, they couldn’t seem to get through the adoption process. They were never even granted the chance. The two men had their suspicions as to why that was, but it was kept silent between them. It was too depressing to address. So instead, they would use every outlet at their disposal to find a child. Even their faith.

    The Goddess answered.

One evening, on Big Wave Beach, a magikarp child washed up on shore. She was no more than 2 years old, and her cries could even be heard through the intense rainstorm. They rescued the girl, and upon closer inspection, they discovered that this little girl was blessed with a tail instead of legs. This was a genuine mermaid they held in their arms. It sank in as they cradled the tiny child that she was their wish come true. This was their child.

Though, it would be unethical to simply take a child in without looking for her mother, wouldn’t it? In fact, Raising their daughter, Leialoha, came with many unforeseen challenges. She absolutely needed to stay by the shore, because Leia needed to be in water for half the day or she would dehydrate rapidly. It was a lesson they learned terribly well after she feinted once. Getting her to eat was also a challenge - she shied away from anything that wasn't a fish. With age and persistence from her fathers, she would learn to adapt to land food (but she still hates green peppers). Traveling was a challenge since water was a must, so the Greys did not get to vacation often. Their daughter would also have to use a wheelchair, since it was the only practical way for her to get around. The fathers were elated to see how quickly little Leia learned on her own once she was big enough.

Then there was the matter of her family. Did she even have one? They all wanted to know the truth, so part of Leialoha’s swim time was spent taking the family boat and sailing out into the big blue in search of them. But no matter how far out they sailed, no others of Leialoha’s kind could be found. No one came to claim her, and before they all knew it, the young magikarp was 10 years old and still with her fathers. And asking so many questions (as kids do). But there was one she never stopped asking, no matter how many answers she got:

    “Where did I come from?”

She’d stop asking the question aloud when she hit her teens. The newest hurdle was now Leialoha was learning how to get along in a land dweller society as a sea dweller. No one knew for sure how people would react, and there was a definite fear of Leialoha being taken away. The Greys were lucky enough to live in a small, tight knit community, and especially good at keeping secrets. Leialoha was to be homeschooled. Her friends were limited to the few who lived close enough to her house, which was nested by a secluded beach. Kealohi and John tried their best to be good company, but their company began to pale in comparison to friends her age. Of which, she had few. But she found a way to compensate for that. And it started with a computer.

Like a lot of girls her age, Leialoha liked makeup. At 16, she was much more proficient with the computer than her fathers. She used this to create her first makeup tutorial under the persona “Aquamarine,” It was a small step to what would become a budding online career. Feeling as if she could be herself, Leialoha decided to share her identity to the world: she was a real mermaid, and since that day, her following exploded and thrived. At first, her internet success was a secret. But her fathers would find out eventually, she knew, and they did.

It became evident that Leialoha could not be kept at home forever. Their growing girl was about to reach her 20s and hadn’t seen anything farther than their beach town. She wanted to go out, to go experience the things she had been reading about! The Magikarp pitched the idea of a travel vlog - a way to earn money and see the world at the same time. Naturally terrified, Kealohi objected, but John was moved by his daughter’s courage and swayed his husband into agreeing, with the following caveat: Leialoha needed to call every week, at the same time on the same day. She agreed, and Aqua began her journey across the globe.

    It wore her down fast.

Online, she was a bubbly, bright young girl. But offline, she was withering. The world was big and scary. Being an adult looked a lot easier on paper than in practice. She faced constant questions about her tail. People couldn’t seem to pronounce her name, so she started going by Aqua to make it easier on herself and others. Attention turned into harassment, and all of this was concealed behind a digital screen. Even deeper and more distressing, Aqua found herself revisiting a questions that she had long forgotten about:

Who was she? Where did she come from?

There came a day where she made her call to her fathers and she broke down in tears. What could they do for their sweet baby girl? For now, it was the same solution as always: come back home and hide in their little house by the beach. Aqua would spend time recouping and opening back up to her fathers about her experience. She was much quieter than before. But, underneath the silence, she was still curious, still her sweet old self. And she wanted to try this adult thing again, maybe do it right this time.

And this time, she would not make this decision alone. Kealohi brought home a travel pamphlet one day that boasted something incredible: Raccolto, a place where merfolk lived. It was astonishing, and Aqua latched onto the idea of moving there quickly. But then came the question of how. She would need a job to pay for expenses, and vlogging didn’t seem like a viable option for many reasons…a few weeks were spent tossing around ideas until Aqua settled on being a lifeguard. It wasn’t her first choice. But hey, she liked swimming, she needed swimming, and she was good at swimming. And it was altruistic - Aqua wanted to help people. She was a quick learner, so training wouldn’t be an issue. And really, she couldn’t settle on anything else.

This was not the end goal, she thought, but it was a starting line. The family sailed to Raccolto together: one last family vacation before their baby girl moved out one last time. But at the docks, Leialoha parted with the assurance that she could call her fathers at any time. In a place like this, where mermaids weren’t so strange and every beach needed a lifeguard, Aqua felt she could answer that 24 year old question of who she was.

Ability: Rattled. In a twist of irony, though Aqua loves ghosts and creatures of the night, they innately frighten her. Getting a nasty scare or being struck by a ghost, dark, or bug type move will raise her speed.
Moveset: Aqua only knows one move.
Splash. Absolutely useless in battle, but it makes a good sign off for her videos.

Job: Business; Lifeguard
       Business Name: The Sea Listers
Stock Type: Protection and assistance at sea, first aid, and beach maintenance. Aqua is responsible for watching Rapture Retreat’s Public Beach and works there full time.

Cat's Race: Swirlix
Cat's name: Sunday
Cat's gender: Male
Sunday is SUPPOSED to help Aqua in her lifeguard duties, but instead he chooses to destroy. Nothing is safe or sacred. He knows when he’s not supposed to be doing something, but the Swirlix is still in his puppy phase, so he's determined to push the limits of what she can get away with. Sunday is accustomed to riding around in Aqua's bags when they're out.

Funfacts
  • As a mermaid, Aqua needs to be conscious about how much time she spends in and out of water. Here are some facts on how she handles it:

        - Aqua needs to be in water for at minimum 8 hours a day, with 12 hours a day being ideal (similar to sleep: 6 is that bare minimum but 8 is what you             need).

        - When she can't get the full 12 hours, Aqua can use Splash to supplement what she missed (building on the sleep metaphor, Splash is like a cup of coffee,        it keeps her hydrated but it's a sign that she should probably get back to water).

        - Because she's a Magikarp, the kind of water is not an issue! Her totem can handle both fresh and salt water. Aqua made sure her property was close to         the beach and she has a nice cove to sleep in while submerged. In emergencies (and when she was a child), she can spend time in a full tub, but                 nowadays, it's not a long term solution: living by a lake or an ocean is a necessity now.

  • Aqua has been using a wheelchair since she was very young and she is quite comfortable with it. Her coat disguises the fact that she's surprisingly strong.

  • “Aquamarine” is not her given name - Leialoha is. She took Aqua because many non native Alolans had trouble pronouncing her name (it’s pronounced Lay-ah-loh-hah).

  • Leialoha means “darling child,” and her parents picked the name intentionally.

  • Aqua works with four other life guards: Oola, Kamal, Chaz, and Min-Dae, to maintain Raccolto’s beaches.

  • LOVES cryptids, in fact she loves them more than traveling. She ghost hunts on the weekends in graveyards.

  • Has the guilty pleasure of scanning the tabloids. She never believes or buys them, but they’re funny to read.
