Description Black Hill, Maryland

I took this piece using an infrared converted Canon 40D (590nm) and a fisheye lens.

Now that we are in the great season of Autumn, the colours of the leaves should prove for some interesting photographs!

The white fluffiness is mist, not cloud. There were no clouds in the sky as the sun rose on the other side of this part of the land, hence why the trees on the right side are mostly in shadow.

Great work. Angle of the pictureΒ strengthens the title.

I love the mist and the colours, but I rarely like diagonal shots. It makes me need to tilt my head, since my brain wants to see it horizontal and I don't really understand why photographers want to make it more difficult to view their scapes. That might be just me though, but I don't get it I'm really curious as to what it would like like horizontally framed.

Ah, that is interesting! I am of the opposite - most of my photographs are diagonal in one way or form.

It is dependent on your view/perception on whether it is difficult to view or not. Realistically speaking, the scape isn't diagonal, so in that sense, it is difficult to get used to something that isn't realistic.

I think I did take a few straight horizontal shots of this, but I don't really upload them to DeviantArt because it is not interesting for me. When I browse DeviantArt, there are plenty of straight horizontal shots. Partly, I don't want mine to be yet another one, and partly, it wouldn't be interesting if it was. The fact that it provokes you in this way makes it more interesting - that's part of the reason why I take photographs the way I do.

Then again, it depends on the piece. If there isn't something else that makes it interesting (e.g. weird focusing), then I usually express it through the diagonal or something else. To some degree, it has become an instinctual thing.

Of course it all comes down to personal preference, when it comes to shooting but also when it comes to viewing.

If the straight horizontal shots aren't interesting to you, you shouldn't upload them of course

I think I have shot a few diagonal shots in the past, but with the horizon in both of the corners. Like I said, it all comes down to personal preference. It's not a case of "I don't like it at all", that's usually the case when someone took a straight horizontal shot that isn't exactly straight... just a bit off. That's what bothers me usually, but that would be a pet peeve, I guess

3wyl In reply to Anoya [2017-01-08 14:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Yes, ultimately it comes down to our personal preference or subjective taste.

I think a photographer should have the horizontal as 'foundation' before doing anything else. I take those photos, but during post-processing/review, I move past them more often than not.

We all have varying degrees of liking it or not. I can appreciate a horizontal shot by another photographer, but it's different for my own shots. Funnily enough, I do intend to upload a horizontal 'landscape' type shot, but mostly because it has a castle/estate on the horizon. For me, if it was just trees and nature, I would go beyond the horizon, but having something substantial on there like a castle/estate almost 'forces' the view to be a straight horizontal/landscape for me.

It is intriguing how we approach these things.

Its interesting that you've kept to that diagonal composition that I've seen in a few of your other shots over the years. In a strange way the infrared makes it almost more autumn-ish (or even winter-ish) than it was. The colors with the way you've composed it almost makes it look like the smoke and reflection on the water is inflating the physical world. Nicely done yo

This takes me back to my childhood in Maine. Β

This is a really amazing photo; if you want to look at it from a fantasy point of view, it's like one side is the real world and the other side is the world of fairies. Like, this really feels mystical to me. ^^Β
Everything also looks so pure in this picture--the air looks like it probably smells super crisp, and the water looks so clean. It looks untouched, unsoiled.Β
I am a little thrown off by the tilt of the picture, but when you stop looking at it from a realistic point of view and start thinking abstractly, it makes the image. It's like everything is being pulled to the a center point and two energies are colliding or being absorbed.
You can really do so much with this, it's actually exciting the more I look at it.

^^ it's beautiful, and riveting.Β

Maine must be really beautiful! I've seen a few photographs of Maine and it's quite something.

I can see where you are coming from! The piece is quite divided in that way, as if it could portray the divide between reality and fantasy.

The air was very crisp. It helped that we went quite early in the morning. It was also very peaceful and quiet - as you said, untouched and unsoiled.

Thank you so much for your comment! I'm always happy to hear about other people's point of view and what they get from a photograph.
