Description from the historical medical drama series The Knick

Having a bit of an artist/writer's block this week so I thought I'd go back to doing studies for a bit.

ink, marker and white charcoal on tone paper

I'm so glad to have discovered this show. Dr. Edwards is easily my favorite character, particularly because it amazes me how he maintains his tact in the face of so many insults.

I'm happy that you chose him as a study subject.

Yeah!! He had quite an emotional story arc, I thought.

Oh wow I missed this one on FB, really beautiful work, that white on dark paper for highlights has been very pleasing to the eyes to see

Yeah, the real MVP of these sketches has been the white charcoal pencil. It's SUPER thick so it pops, but also comes erases really easily (via kneaded eraser) so you can get a crisp finish to the drawing, and you can feather or smear it for a gradient. it's also great at covering up mistakes in the inking/marker process, just sayin' XD;;;

Haha I never thought of it being used to cover up mistakes, you smart

Haha, I dunno if I'm a master of any. Otherwise I'd be getting hired to do those in particular...

Thank you kindly.

Thanks. ^^ I have 2 more I want to do, then I should be back to actual steampunk art, not just fanart of shows set in the 1900s.

They go for $30 to $40 a pop at your local haberdashery. I know I and my friends got ours at every expo we attend.

He's far too handsome for it, but still I can't help but feel like shouting, "Hey, Algie!!" XD

His eyes are so gentle and you got the little clip in/of his eyebrow there.  If I were you, I'd want to make use of my bowler hat-drawing practice via Pete!

47ness In reply to sweet-suzume [2018-06-23 18:31:07 +0000 UTC]

That's a surefire way to break his cool guy façade...! XD;
Haha, I'm pretty much on autopilot these days with bowler hats.  among other dapper accoutrements
It was definitely tricky going for the slightly turned front-facing pose, but Algie's sooooo dapper in this frame that I couldn't resist.

Heh heh.  I was thinking that Lucy is just Lucy, but Algernon and Thackery do get some of that 'Algie' and 'Thack' nicknaming.  (Bertie is, on the other hand, basically always Bertie XD; )

You have a good estimate there of how low-down to draw the hat and such??

It was a very nice choice!!

47ness In reply to sweet-suzume [2018-06-23 18:55:35 +0000 UTC]

And of course "Neely-doll!"

I've probably drawn as many bowlers as Magritte, no thanks to Pete.

By the way, while searching for reference images, I came across an online Amy Schumer skit called "Knick Jr.", I don't suppose you've ever seen it?

Ha ha ha, true!

...I'm laughing, but it's not just it's like something that could funny, went around in serious, and almost made it back to funny again.

No, I haven't seen (or heard of) that-?

Here's the skit

(fair warning: it's related to The Knick, so expect the same amount of graphic imagery~)

I watched the skit off where it was up with along with an article on Collider.com.......I'll let you see if you want for yourself....!

(oops, haha; missed your follow-up comment)

Yessss, Jeremy Bobb opting to play Barrow in a parody of the show is perfect.

There's definitely something surreal about how they used the existing set + camera/lighting rigs. Sort of like that Boardwalk Empire music video with rapping!Sebso. ¦P

sweet-suzume In reply to 47ness [2018-06-24 15:39:59 +0000 UTC]

(well, dA doesn't necessarily show one the comments one's received in an easily track-able order)

Yessssssss, I liked that too.  Same old Barrow, "The Knick" or "Knick Jr." XD

I liked that- the more carefully they mimicked the show in certain camera/lighting arrangements the more ludicrous the child actors seemed to me.  (Did you notice Nurse Elkins in the high chair? XD; )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

47ness In reply to sweet-suzume [2018-06-24 16:19:55 +0000 UTC]

Same old Barrow, eager to make a buck even with child surgeons if you want to get meta with the joke. XD

Yeah, Baby Elkins was extra "awww".

sweet-suzume In reply to 47ness [2018-06-24 20:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha ha ha ha, yes, even with them

Baby Elkins was too tiny to need much coaching, but it made me wonder what they'd told the other kids before starting this?? XD;

47ness In reply to sweet-suzume [2018-06-24 20:57:33 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't say, but there's probably a lot of clever editing going on so the child actors didn't actually have to engage in the same graphic medical drama moments as the Cinemax version.
