Description Here's the final look for my joint advertisement with

The image is 1:1 scale to what it will be like in printed form. There's also a small 1/8" bleed around the outside.

LAST MINUTE FEEDBACK WOULD BE V'RY NICE. <3
I'm mainly looking for your thoughts on the overall layout + graphics (the actual artwork itself is more or less done) ^~;

I'll give this flyer a 10 out 10.

Hot damn,.. why couldn't OUR ad be like this the first time around?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Rocky-O [2012-03-12 21:23:30 +0000 UTC]

I... Idk. XD; I think *Sio64 took the initiative on this one, as far as how to SELL SELL SELL.

Shannanigan [2012-03-10 23:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh no... not unreasonable cuteness!! LOL!

So only your side or both? One thing on the left... the glowing guy and cat panels are really close in color & tone so they blend.
The cat kinda got lost for me until I read the text. I don't know if its possible.. but maybe darken up the area nearest the frame on one side for a clearer transition?

Reading the other comments I have to say I prefer the B/W side is more interesting as its "mysterious"... not all guns 'a blazing. But then again I don't think I'm your target market with this ad.
You also have your "action shot" on the front... and the Crankrats cover is more subdued. I think the balance is good.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Shannanigan [2012-03-11 00:32:50 +0000 UTC]

Good point about the lighting. My friend's been improving by leaps and bounds in just the past 12 months, so every bit of advice goes heeded.

Yah it's a mixed crowd, steampunk is. But I'm doing three comic/anime conventions and only one actual steam-con, so majority rules.

Thanks for droppin' in; i know i've been a bit distant online... +-+

Shannanigan In reply to 47ness [2012-03-12 01:25:52 +0000 UTC]

No problem... I've been literally distant from this site.
I've been doing a lot of non-art stuff lately (with the move to NYC!!)
So I haven't been on here much...

47ness In reply to Shannanigan [2012-03-12 03:08:22 +0000 UTC]

(Gwahhh. I am jelly.)

I feel like I need to be deprived from online crazyness (though Chinese-style censorship is an extreme solution..)

Suki-kitty [2012-03-10 18:35:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's a lot better than the first version. No offense. This is just so much more balanced and engaging.

Some day I'll get around to looking at all these comics you recommend.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Suki-kitty [2012-03-10 18:49:24 +0000 UTC]

Yup! I started to overthink the ad kinda like how I overthink my storywriting. This version's MUCH more suitable for a comic/anime convention; even more than the Darn Tootin' flyer from last year I think. No offense to Rocky; her stuff is always eye-catching.

Ahaha. S'okay. Did you take a quick gander at Just The First Frame though~?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Suki-kitty In reply to 47ness [2012-03-10 21:36:46 +0000 UTC]

Well it's kinda hard to fit the overall feel of a comic in one page. But this one works really well!

Not specifically, but I think I've glanced at some of those here and there. On top of the five or six that my friends keep insisting I have to read. ._.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Suki-kitty [2012-03-10 23:42:38 +0000 UTC]

and I had a discussion about just what to put on this side. We decided it was better to just collage everything, instead of finding one single comic page that had enough wit, charm and action crammed into it to wow ppl.

That's fine; was just asking you to glance anyway.

NOT TO MENTION I WANT ONE OF THESE FLYER THINGS.

lol, anyway good luck to you!

Sio64 [2012-03-09 10:47:59 +0000 UTC]

I may be less than helpful here!

I love the old layout of your backgrounds. They do show off your awe-mighty talent, and the old vintage 'film real' type feeling is awesome. If you -do- want to change it or add something to it, maybe keep the layout how it is but have a few smoking bullet holes punched into the page? So there's a hint at something maybe going on right behind it Because there's a whole lotta gun toting in your comic, and things are hardly peaceful!

I dunno xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

47ness In reply to Sio64 [2012-03-09 12:39:24 +0000 UTC]

...............well,

I kinda threw the old one out. I was trying too hard to be clever and after listening to feedback I realized my half barely felt like an ad for a comic. ;

Oh yeah, and I improved the lighting on yours, which balances it out better, methinks. :>

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sio64 In reply to 47ness [2012-03-09 12:41:33 +0000 UTC]

Oooo can't wait to see

I do like the old one, hold onto it for future purposes perhaps

Can't wait to see what's new though!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Sio64 [2012-03-09 12:45:54 +0000 UTC]

EDIT'd...!

I kinda just borrowed your concept. I think it really works to hook new readers...! (my other one is better suited to people who already know the work, yanno?)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sio64 In reply to 47ness [2012-03-09 12:50:15 +0000 UTC]

AWH SO CUTE!

Look at little Sally <333

And holycrap that robot mouse xD That'd send Joey running!

That's fine xD It means they match!

If you think the old version would be well received with older readers, why not use it as a page for "Next time in SSnPP.." Type of thing with teaser art?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Sio64 [2012-03-09 12:58:46 +0000 UTC]

Yes! MOAR ENERGY. Also, the "HE GLOWS" actually glows now. XD XD

Gotta remember people will be picking these up at a COMIC CONVENTION, so their attention span will be like

I'd love to work in "Next Time...!" features in future issues. Just a matter of having all the ideas figured out...! 8รพ

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sio64 In reply to 47ness [2012-03-09 13:04:36 +0000 UTC]

Lmao eeeexcellent.

Sadly that is true xD The birmingham one was great, but some people came in, jumped from table to table taking leaflets and cards and then looked at them elsewhere. London's going to be insane o.o;

And this is very true xD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Sio64 [2012-03-09 14:36:56 +0000 UTC]

Bwahaha, I ordered 500 copies. Gonna be shoving them into peoples hands every chance I get for the next four conventions.

Ah yes; they're trying to maximize their time by rushing through the artist alley.
Every once in a blue moon I get someone who emails me back- days after the convention- saying they liked the comic ...and wishing that they had bought the books.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Sio64 In reply to 47ness [2012-03-09 15:39:26 +0000 UTC]

Sounds about right, ill do the same, should easily carry me through birmingham and mcm london.

Do you make the books available online after the shows? Might be a thought, i'm goign to try via DA and paypal. =3

if you do bring out the 200 page paperback ima jump on that bwahahaa!

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Sio64 [2012-03-09 20:38:51 +0000 UTC]

Usually if the convention organizers are nice about it, they'll also have a table in the main lobby that everyone can leave ads at~

I have mailed at least one set out by request...! (I thought about putting it on Amazon or Etsy, but it means spending money on an ISBN # and bar code per issue) Either way, it's much better to say the books are exclusive con purchases, where you can form a personal connection with the buyer. :>

That might not be ready until May. But it's going to get done!

Sio64 In reply to Sio64 [2012-03-09 10:48:34 +0000 UTC]

Reel* even.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

JesnCin [2012-03-09 10:21:19 +0000 UTC]

Hmm I see the point of the previous comments on how the "energy" is rather imbalanced between the two advertisements problem is I really like how you've made the layout of your side of the advertisement XD the "stamp collection" feels so vintage and I love the over all simplicity of it; how the atmosphere of the story is captured in so few words feels so nostalgic <3 (sort of reminds me of "The Artist" trailers).
I suppose you could alter it to balance the action-packed feel of the other comic, though I can't help but feel attached to this one. Aghhh I'm no help at all

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to JesnCin [2012-03-09 12:40:59 +0000 UTC]

Hee, I personally liked it too, but I have to remember my audience is going to want something EXCITING.

Thanks for your thoughts, all the saaame~ <3

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JesnCin In reply to 47ness [2012-03-10 15:58:16 +0000 UTC]

Haha yushh you did a lovely job with those alliterations at least X) they're catchy!

As always :>

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to JesnCin [2012-03-10 16:14:46 +0000 UTC]

Huh. I already took it to print. But should I have used pure alliterations for my ad...??

I didn't even notice what I had done until you pointed it out now. ::was operating on very funky sleep cycles all last week:: (still am, actually...) XD;

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JesnCin In reply to 47ness [2012-03-11 14:50:54 +0000 UTC]

HAHAHA XD I guess that means alliterations are embedded into your head subconsciously
You could save the alliterations for another time perhaps. Since "unreasonable cuteness" just sells it, haha XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to JesnCin [2012-03-11 17:51:35 +0000 UTC]

Quirky dialog in general sells steampunk, I've uncovered. XD;

City-of-Zeroes [2012-03-09 05:10:42 +0000 UTC]

Wish you were here is not engaging enough compared to "OMG WTF READ MEH NAO" on the left. It really makes me feel like there should be something else going on, like maybe an extreme close up of Pete doffing his hat or something on the bottom. The energy just isn't balanced.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to City-of-Zeroes [2012-03-09 05:27:02 +0000 UTC]

...I see what you mean...! Gotta come up with something more energetic (but still strike a balance with the Crankrats half)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

City-of-Zeroes In reply to 47ness [2012-03-09 05:51:24 +0000 UTC]

I like your ad, the problem is , for me, just the energy balance, I wouldn't junk your ad, I'd definitely save it for another time, but I'd get a moar bombastic ad this time around.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to City-of-Zeroes [2012-03-09 06:26:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'll admit I was mostly inspired by Communication Arts magazine, which spotlights witty "sophisticated" ad concepts. Definitely not intended for a young, comic-reading audience. XD;

akinotasogare [2012-03-09 03:25:46 +0000 UTC]

Jshauk [2012-03-09 03:08:45 +0000 UTC]

I think you two should write a comic together. I find Crankrats more interesting, but I'm humbled by your artwork. the immense detail is incredible. love both comics tho.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Jshauk [2012-03-09 04:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your honest answer~!

Dualmask [2012-03-09 00:43:33 +0000 UTC]

One thing that crossed my mind immediately is that the text blends in too much with the art on the left hand side. I'm no graphic designer, but I would think you wouldn't want either the art or the text to overwhelm the other, and for both to get equal attention, so maybe the text should be little brighter or in a different color since you really can't miss the art (which looks great by the way). I could be completely wrong about that though.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

47ness In reply to Dualmask [2012-03-09 00:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Good point. We'll see what we can do about that.
