wow this painting is from 2013...back then it took me days I think (2-3).
but now it takes me 3-4 hours tops.

I used to use the smudge alot and it didn't work for me at all, took too long and the results were somewhat freakish (but I know some use it quite well though and are satisfied).

I now use a soft round brush at low opacity and flow (start at about 10%) to smooth things out.- give it a try and see if it works for u

Thanks! I feel the same way about the smudge tool! It just doesnt look right or work for me, Ill try your suggestion on a portrait Im working on now!

How long have you been painting? Its hard for me to achieve this kind of polish without ref but Ive been looking through your gallery and it doesnt look like you use ref for everything? I cant wait will I can do this kind of stuff from imagination!

well I've been drawing since I can remember myself, but I went digital 2 years ago.

I use ref alot, I search things or take pictures from live models.

I decide what I want to draw and then find ref pics and combine them together (I do change ALOT).

I mean if you had problems drawing lips, than you are giving me hope right now! May be I'll manage master this hard process too. 'Cos lips on your portrait are so realistic and... alive that one expects them to smile or talk or show a tongue

honest, these pair of lips are the first ones I feel remotely happy with.
sometimes the learning progress is slow as hell and sometimes you somehow get it right...but hey I'm still learning, same as everybody.
