I like how the root of the problem is while Elinor wanted to follow tradition, she became bossy, controlling and tried to make Merida into something she wasn't, and it was because of that Merida rebelled and couldn't see why Elinor's position was so important as Elinor did nothing but expect a lot from Merida and not listen to her and put the kingdom over her, and out of impulse Merida just wanted her mother to see things the way she see's it with the enchanted cake but didn't know the consequences and changed Elinor into a bear by mistake.
I think Elinor turning into a bear humbled her seeing that she didn't have to be proper in the woods and felt comfortable for the first time, and feels what Merida always wanted: freedom and saw that everything Merida is and saw that tradition is sometimes meant to be broken and almost put her daughter in an unhappy marriage and destroy their bond and that no one is perfect and that people, including her daughter, should not be forced to be something they aren't. The whole time she wanted Merida to be a proper royal lady, while in reality she is a firey warrior princess ready for battle and can be reasoned with if listened to.
And because Elinor isn't controlling as a bear and listens to Merida for once, Merida learns how to be a diplomat and can see why the kingdom's future is important without Elinor being in her face about it and they both became better and happier people in the end. Merida learns the importance of taking care of a kingdom like Elinor does and Elinor learns the importance of freedom, independence and that tradition isn't always important and if Merida is to et married it will be by her choice and she will choose her husband.
