I'm not sure if there a way I can explain that will make sense. When I paint, I sketch roughly what I'm doing, and then I lay colors on in the appropriate area. I spend a lot of time staring at the reference photo as I'm coloring, though.

I love the back part of his hair -- many people assume it's always silky straight which makes them stray a little from accuracy. I really like that although it's a portrait, it's not exactly 100% realism in terms of the coloring, like something infused with your own style. I'm not sure if that's what you were going for but I like it.
