Description
This is my first proper go at digital painting.I think it went okay, but there are many things which could be improved on.
In the end I gave up on the shirt and making the hair look like it wasn't stuck on.

Yes, it took the longest out of the whole thing.
It was quite difficult, but saying that, it was my first go at a digital painting.

I hate doing hair the most, I just get a charcoal pencil and do buncha lines

That's awesome, good work! Saying constructive critismism is harsh, critique or feeback is much more suiting
1. I love the depth and complexity of the skin however, you may want to work on smoothing and blending. The chin is a little bumpy looking along the jaw line.
2. Hair: Near the ends use a finer brush to get it a little thinner, or blend past the tip to taper it. Shading underneath the hair ( both shading on the hair itself and on the skin) would make it look like it wasn't "Stuck on". So will the tapering the ends of the strands.
I wish I could remember where the photoshop tutorial was that really helped me. You basically start with drawing one segment of hair and you can use that layer over and over again by turning it, warping it, using layer effects. It also seriously cuts down the time on doing hair. I can't do eyebrows to save my life though!

I have taken on your advice and edited the painting a bit.
I don't think it looks that much different, but I can see the improvement.
I've never tried drawing eyebrows, but they don't look easy

My pleasure and thank you! It's taken more practice than I'm willing to admit to, to get the blending right.
I can see where you've made the changes as well and it does look quite a bit better.
The only other thing I see which is probably contributing, I know someone else pointed out and that's the white line around the hair. I'm not sure which program you use but Photoshop's burn tool would probably eliminate that.
I use Photoshop CS2.

Great job! 9999x times better than my digital painting LOL this is really good! I thought it was the original photo at first haha
The only critique I can offer is to not have that white outer glow for the hair, because then it looks more fake and the white outline separates it distinctly from the skin beneath it (in a negative way). But otherwise this looks awesome
