Planning to do something with this at some point.
IOTL, Bophuthatswana tried to break away from South Africa as it democratized - because the leader had taken quite a fancy to that whole "dictator" thing. In this he was supported by the AWB, which saw the opportunity to fight against the new South African government. Shenanigans occured and obviously Bophuthatswana is now part of South Africa again.

Sadly for Bophuthatswana, it has quite possibly the worst borders ever seen, even by bantustan standards, so I decided not to make a map of it! Instead, this map is from a universe where Bantu Holomisa decides not to join Transkei back into the Republic, and as a result Transkei stays independent. The map itself takes place in 1996, just before Holomisa is overthrown in a popular uprising and democracy is installed.

I'm not going to pretend for a single second the AWB had nothing to do with this, since this one is really "everything as happened in 1994 but every time they say Bophuthatswana it's actually Transkei, which is easier to write and prettier to map". As is the usual with these things, I don't condone bantustans for a single second. Apartheid was bad and we should legitimately not glorify it. It's just that any of the four big bantustans (Bophuthatswana, Transkei, Ciskei, kwaZulu) work well as alt-hist African countries.
