Some months ago, I completed a personal project: the Zodiac illustrations. I always loved the zodiac and I tried to pay homage to its sources: mythology and history. In this case, Virgo, as the symbol of the maiden, is based on Astraea. In Greek mythology, she was the last immortal to abandon Earth at the end of the Silver Age, when the gods fled to Olympus. She is the virgin goddess of innocence and purity, and became the constellation of Virgo when she ascended to heaven.
This sign has a direct association with Earth and wheat, hence the connection with the myth of Demeter and Persephone, as both are Earth goddesses and Persephone was a symbol of purity and innocence before becoming Queen of the Underworld.
Another possible association is with the myth of Parthenos (meaning virgin in Greek), a daughter of Apollo. And, of course, we cannot forget the Virgin Mary as another inspiration for some of the representations of Virgo.
